Volta Accelerates EV Charging
Volta is well known for building the most utilized and people-centric EV charging network in the United States. The company offers sponsored charging to EV drivers where they like to be. The company’s charging stations double as ad platforms. This increases the value of the real estate where the stations are located, and catches the interest of new audiences. The ad platforms tell high impact stories and use sustainable technology.
Scott Mercer and Chris Wendel founded Volta Charging in 2010. Well-known actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio was an early investor.
Volta Charging merged with Tortoise Acquisition Company II in 2021. When the merger was complete, Volta went public on the New York Stock Exchange on August 27, 2021.
As of September 2021, the company boasts over 2,000 EV charging stations spread across twenty-three U.S. states. Topgolf partnered with Volta in November 2021, to install EV charging stations at Topgolf entertainment centers. Volta’s revenues increased 77 percent year-over-year to $8.5 million in the third financial quarter of 2021.
Collaboration with Walgreens
On February 14, 2022, Volta announced a collaboration with Walgreens. With this collaboration, Volta targeted the installation of 1,000 DC fast charging stalls at over 500 Walgreens stores across the United States. Volta first began working with Walgreens in 2019. Currently, there are Volta stations at 49 Walgreens stores.
Scott Mercer, Founder and CEO of Volta, said: “As we expand our DC Fast charging presence across the country, Walgreens is an ideal match for faster forms of Volta charging given the average time a Walgreens shopper typically spends in-store. Volta’s intelligent charging network is built around understanding and anticipating consumer behavior. The next phase of our work with Walgreens will provide people with a quick, convenient, and meaningful charge that is tailored to their shopping experience while bringing us another step closer to a clean energy future.”
Breaking into European markets
In February 2022, the company provided an update on its activities in European markets. The German movie theater company Cineplex Group, and global sporting goods chain Decathlon, both signed partnership deals with Volta.
Volta also broke into the French EV charging market. The company celebrated the installation of its first charging stations at Key West restaurant, near Annecy, France. Volta’s new offices in Berlin and Paris are driving more European expansion.
Volta supports new EPA clean air standards
It’s obvious that the Volta team cares deeply about the environment, and doing their part to reduce greenhouse gasses. After all, an EV charging company is doing that just by doing business. Volta took that commitment a step further by joining in support of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement on December 20, 2021, that takes significant strides towards an all-electric, zero-emissions transportation future. The EPA is finalizing federal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks that target significant pollution reductions through model year 2026, and Volta pledged to be a part of those new standards.
Retail locations are ideal for new EV charging stations
Volta seeks to transform the fueling industry by building open-network charging stations in locations where drivers already spend their time and money. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail locations are ideal places to install EV chargers, and the company is focused on doing just that. The company is capturing new spending habits expected to result from the shift to electric vehicles. In November 2021, Volta announced installation of new charging stations at Kohl’s in Virginia.
The Volta Media Network
Also in November 2021, Volta announced the launch of the Volta Media Network, offering advertisers a digital, location-based network that engages consumers where they shop. The system simultaneously drives measurable business results and environmental impact.
High-impact digital screens are displayed on Volta’s charging stations. These stations are in front of top commercial locations. Content is displayed for drivers who plug their vehicles into the stations and the customers who shop at the retailers nearby.
The content is quite valuable from an advertising perspective. Volta Media offers brands a dynamic content platform that allows them to engage potential customers and influence behavior right before they walk into a store or other commercial property to make a purchase. This kind of exposure of products keeps the product on the shopper’s mind when entering the store.
Brands who are advertising with Volta Media have seen a 44% lift in awareness. Also, a 66% increase in consideration, and a 59% increase in purchase intent have been reported from Volta’s third-party brand study benchmarks.
Nadya Kohl, Chief Marketing Officer, Volta, said: “The biggest economic opportunity isn’t in conquesting fueling dollars; it’s in unlocking the spend that will accompany the behavior shift around fueling habits. Volta is reinventing retail media by fusing high-impact digital displays with EV charging, connecting brands to the most powerful audience movement in a generation. Consumers are increasingly focused on sustainability, and they’re giving their attention and wallets to the brands that are doing the same. We offer advertisers the ability to participate in a unique medium that showcases their commitment to driving cultural relevance and true environmental impact.”
Volta builds the EV charging infrastructure of the future
Volta’s goal is to build the EV charging infrastructure of the future. EV charging stations benefit consumers, brands, and real-estate locations where they are located. The stations enhance their site hosts and strategic partners’ core commercial interests. This creates a new way for everyone to benefit from the transformative shift to electric mobility.
