Range Energy’s Electric Heavy-Duty Trailer Now Eligible for Up To $120,000 Voucher
In a pioneering move that underscores the growing emphasis on clean transportation solutions, The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has recently updated the point-of-sale incentive for Range Energy’s 53-foot electric trailer, elevating it to an impressive $120,000 per unit. This decision comes as part of the Clean Off-Road Equipment (CORE) Voucher Project, aimed at accelerating the adoption of zero-emission technologies in the cargo and freight sector. Notably, in July 2023, Range Energy distinguished itself as the first trailer electrification platform to gain acceptance into the CORE program. Initially, CARB had set the incentive at $80,000, but the adjustment reflects both the agency’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and its support for innovative solutions that can make a significant environmental impact.
Range Energy’s approach to accelerating the electrification of commercial transportation is embodied in its innovative development of electric-powered trailers specifically designed for the heavy-duty freight market. These state-of-the-art trailers are engineered to seamlessly connect with existing diesel-powered trucks. This compatibility feature not only ensures a smooth transition towards cleaner transportation solutions but also significantly amplifies the efficiency of traditional freight operations. According to Range Energy, integrating their electric trailers with diesel trucks can double the truck’s gas mileage. Additionally, this synergy results in a substantial reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 67%. This breakthrough reflects Range Energy’s commitment to not only advancing clean transportation technology but also to providing practical, immediate benefits to freight companies keen on reducing their ecological footprint without compromising on their operational efficiency.
“Becoming eligible for CORE proved that trailers truly matter in the transition to electric, and that CARB recognizes the meaningful impact electric-powered trailers can have on reducing the emissions of the commercial trucking sector,” said Ali Javidan, founder and CEO of Range. “Increasing our trailer platform’s incentive value by $40,000 further solidifies that position and makes Range a realistic near-term solution for fleet owners and operators to deploy zero emissions equipment.”
As Range Energy continues to push the boundaries of electric trailer technology, the company has expanded its platform’s versatility by offering battery capacities that reach up to 300 kWh. This significant enhancement aligns with the growing demand for longer-range electric transport solutions in the logistics and cargo sectors. Responding to this advancement and Range Energy’s commitment to innovation, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has further extended the CORE program voucher amounts. This extension encompasses Range Energy’s full product lineup, ensuring that the increased capacity options are accessible to a broader range of freight operations. This strategic adjustment by CARB not only underscores the program’s adaptability to evolving technological standards but also bolsters Range Energy’s mission to provide the freight industry with a scalable, efficient route to electrification.
The Range trailer system represents a compelling advancement in making trailers not only smarter but also significantly safer and more efficient across various operating conditions. Specifically designed to be compatible with both dry van and refrigerated (reefer) trailers, the system incorporates an electric propulsion mechanism that dramatically cuts down on fuel consumption and harmful emissions. With a keen focus on enhancing operational efficiency, the Range trailer system effectively reduces diesel consumption not just in transit but also during crucial ancillary operations such as yard maneuvers, dock waiting times, and periods of engine idling.
The core of the system’s innovation lies in its electrification platform, which integrates an e-axle, a dedicated battery pack, and a smart kingpin. This combination not only powers auxiliary devices but also enables zero-emission precooling for Temperature-Controlled Units (TRUs), facilitates the movement of trailers with markedly reduced emissions, and significantly boosts the overall uptime of tractors. Range’s regenerative braking system makes trucks safer as it keeps brakes cool to protect against overheating. Further, Range’s regenerative braking helps return energy from braking into a battery pack to provide fleet owners with better efficiency. Through these features, the Range Energy trailer system is setting new standards for environmental sustainability and operational efficiency in the freight transportation industry.
