EVgo Opens First Prefabricated Fast Charging Site, Reducing Install Time up to 50%

EVgo Inc., a pioneer in the electric vehicle charging network sector, recently unveiled its first rapid charging station utilizing an innovative prefabrication approach. Situated in the Bay Colony Town Center in League City, TX, this groundbreaking station is part of EVgo’s strategic expansion. This prefabrication method marks a significant advancement in the deployment of charging infrastructure, promising to slash construction costs by an average of 15% at qualifying sites. Not only does this development underscore EVgo’s commitment to enhancing the EV charging experience, but it also sets a new standard for the efficient and cost-effective expansion of public fast charging networks across the nation.

With the EVgo network’s throughput expanding at a pace five times quicker than the growth of EVs in operation (VIO) during the fourth quarter of 2023, the utilization of prefabrication methods positions EVgo at the forefront of addressing the surging demand for accessible and dependable charging solutions. The innovative prefabrication approach not only brings significant cost efficiencies but is anticipated to reduce by up to 50% the time required to install charging stations. This expedited deployment capability ensures EVgo remains a step ahead in serving the evolving needs of electric vehicle owners, reinforcing the company’s vision of a widely accessible and robust charging network.

“The opening of our first prefabricated site is a testament to the innovation driving cost reductions and accelerating deployment timelines to scale our growth engine,” said Dennis Kish, President of EVgo. “As demand for public fast charging infrastructure continues to grow, we anticipate leveraging this model at eligible sites to quickly deploy charging stations across the U.S.”

Outside of Texas, EVgo is setting its sights on expanding its network of prefabricated charging stations into several key states in 2024, including Florida, Nebraska, North Carolina, and California. Each station is slated to be equipped with 350kW high-power fast chargers designed for simultaneous charging of multiple electric vehicles. This feature is crucial for accommodating the increasing volume of EVs on the road. Additionally, the prefabrication model allows for the integration of various amenities aimed at enhancing the customer experience. Prospective features include Wi-Fi infrastructure for connectivity, lighting and security cameras for safety, and integrated canopies to provide shelter from the elements.

The success of this innovative prefabrication approach hinges on collaborative efforts with partners such as WB Engineers+Consultants and Miller Electric, among others. This partnership underscores EVgo’s commitment to pioneering solutions that not only expedite the deployment of charging infrastructure but also significantly elevate the overall experience of EV drivers. EVgo is notable for opening the first EV charging station funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program station in the United States, in December 2023.
