The Kia EV5, the First Dedicated EV Platform Model to Be Produced Locally in China

Among the stars of the show was the Kia EV5 long-range model, which was introduced in a dazzling musical-style product showcase, embellishing the event with real-life stories from Kia’s Chinese customer base. This all-electric compact SUV, the Kia EV5, stands as a significant milestone for Kia — it is the first dedicated Kia electric model to commence production locally in China.

Following the footsteps of its critically acclaimed predecessors, the EV6 and EV9, the EV5 is built on the innovative Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform is celebrated for its modular design and unparalleled adaptability, reinforcing Kia’s position at the forefront of the EV market revolution.

To cater to the diverse demands of the Chinese market, the Kia EV5 will be available in three distinct electric models: the standard edition, the long-range version, and the all-wheel drive (AWD) long-range model.

The spotlight falls particularly on the long-range model that is equipped with an impressive 88.1-kWh battery paired with a 160-kW motor, targeting an ambitious range of up to 720 km (447 miles) on a single charge. For those seeking even more power, the long-range AWD variant boosts performance with a total power output of 233 kW, promising exceptional handling and acceleration.

In line with Kia’s dedication to delivering customer-centric features, the EV5 is outfitted with an array of innovative amenities designed for maximum comfort and convenience. Passengers can indulge in relaxation seats complete with massage functions, enjoy the convenience of a built-in refrigerator/warmer, and benefit from the practicality of a multi-table luggage board.

The EV5 doesn’t skimp on technological advancements, either. It introduces the next level of autonomous driving support with Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), enhancing safety and convenience by assisting with keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, lane centering, lane changes, and lateral positioning adjustments.

In addition, the integration of the Kia Digital Key 2 allows for seamless activation of the Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2) system, enabling the vehicle to autonomously park itself.

Universal Wheel Drive System and L4 Smart Driving Technology

Kia continued to impress the audience at the Beijing Auto Show with the introduction of the Universal Wheel Drive System (‘Uni Wheel’), a pioneering approach that promises to redefine future mobility designs. By relocating essential drive system components to the wheel hub, the Uni Wheel system offers a revolutionary increase in interior space.

Additionally, Kia is leveraging advanced L4 Smart Driving Technology to tailor its vehicles specifically to the demands of the Chinese market. This ambitious move is characterized by comprehensive field tests across various locations in China.

The New Cutting-Edge Kia Sonet

Kia has taken the wraps off the Kia Sonet, a model designed to set new standards in its segment for Asian consumers. The Sonet features an array of advanced features, including a Smart Driving System, Forward-Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), alongside a striking 10.25-inch dual display and integration with Baidu Connect 3.0.

A Stunning EV Sales Record in the U.S.

Kia Corporation is a South Korean multinational automobile manufacturer, headquartered in Seoul, and is Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, after its parent company, Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai’s Q1 sales passed an all-time record in March and the first quarter of 2024 in the United States. In March, Hyundai’s electric IONIQ 5 boasted a 58% increase in sales. Hyundai’s general EV sales doubled, contributing to a 35% sales growth of all eco-friendly models.

Hyundai’s overall EV sales for the first quarter of 2024 grew an incredible 62% compared to Q1 2023. Kia’s EV sales went up 88% compared to Q1 2023.

The 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition

The 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, popularly known as Auto China 2024 or the Beijing Auto Show, runs from late April to early May every two years.

Following a four-year intermission due to COVID, global participants thronged to Beijing for this automotive extravaganza, which naturally evolved into a celebration of electric vehicles, as virtually no interest still exists for internal combustion engine vehicles, especially in China, the global leader in EV production and adoption. Hybrids still capture a mild amount of attention in China, but the real stars of the show are battery electric vehicles.
