Driving electric vehicle adoption

Mercedes and Starbucks to Install EV Chargers at 100 Starbucks Stores

As part of Starbucks’ ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and its promise to “give more than we take,” the company is embarking on a significant initiative to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network, at more than 100 Starbucks stores across the country. High-power EV chargers will be installed at various Starbucks locations along a 1,400-mile route on Interstate 5, a critical west coast travel corridor, stretching from Washington to California.

This initiative underscores Starbucks’ dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting clean energy alternatives. By providing accessible and efficient charging options for EV drivers, Starbucks aims to support the growing transition to electric vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Chargers will be installed in core urban areas and charging deserts, and more locations will be identified in the future, including markets on the East Coast.

The installation of these high-power EV chargers will enable drivers to conveniently recharge their vehicles during stops at Starbucks stores, making long-distance travel more feasible and eco-friendly. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate sustainable practices into every aspect of Starbucks’ operations, from sourcing ethically produced coffee to reducing waste and conserving water.

Overall, this initiative aligns with Starbucks’ broader environmental promise and reinforces the company’s leadership in promoting sustainability and responsible business practices. Through these efforts, Starbucks continues to pave the way for a greener future, contributing to a healthier planet for generations to come.

“We’re trying as a company to be as sustainable as we can be,” said Sarah, a Starbucks barista in Washington state whose store features EV charging stations. “Why not do it in a way that people can realize they’re participating, that it’s all shared, so that they can come along for the journey?

“It’s a great way for us to be visible, because people can go and get a great cup of coffee and it makes it an easier decision to buy the electric car that’s going to be better for efficiency, so I think that’s very exciting.”

“At Starbucks, we have a long history of bringing renewable and clean energy projects to connect communities that lack the infrastructure,” said Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer. “Partnering with Mercedes is the next step in expanding our EV charging network so our customers can refuel sustainably while they enjoy Starbucks.”

Starbucks locations on the I-5 route will feature Alpitronic Hypercharger 400 EV chargers, which are equipped with NACS cables and have the capability to charge electric vehicles with a wide voltage range.

“The collaboration between two leading brands like Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks will uplift the charging experience for all EV drivers,” said Andrew Cornelia, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging. “We envision a future where charging your vehicle is as easy as enjoying your favorite Starbucks.”

Volvo Cars Opens Public EV Fast Charging Network at Starbucks Stores

In December 2023, Volvo and Starbucks announced a collaboration to install fifty DC fast chargers, co-branded by Volvo Cars and Starbucks, at fifteen Starbucks locations along a 1,350-mile route between the Denver area and Seattle. This initiative aims to make charging Volvo and other fully electric vehicles as easy as visiting Starbucks.

These chargers, strategically placed about every 100 miles on average, will provide a significant boost in convenience for EV drivers. For 2024 model year and newer Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge models, these high-power chargers can add up to 110 miles of range in just 15 minutes. This fast-charging capability means that drivers can enjoy a brief break at Starbucks while their vehicles quickly gain enough charge to continue their journey.

The collaboration offers EV drivers a network of familiar and welcoming locations to recharge both their vehicles and themselves. While their cars are charging outside, drivers and passengers can relax inside Starbucks with their favorite beverages, making the charging experience more pleasant and integrated into their daily routines.

For Volvo owners, the process is made even more seamless with the car’s integrated ChargePoint app, which allows them to locate and access charging stations at participating Starbucks locations. Drivers of other electric vehicles equipped with a standard CCS1 or CHAdeMO receptacle can utilize the ChargePoint smartphone app to find and use these chargers.

This effort by Volvo and Starbucks represents a significant step towards supporting the adoption of electric vehicles by providing accessible and convenient charging options. It aligns with both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation, promoting a cleaner and more efficient mode of transportation.
