Nuvve Applauds Signing of SB 59, a New California V2G Bidirectional EV Charging Law
On September 27, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 59, sponsored by California State Senator Nancy Skinner. The new law grants the California Energy Commission (CEC) the authority to require battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across various weight classes to have bidirectional capabilities, if a compelling use case benefits both the operator and the electric grid.
This new law also requires the CEC to collaborate with the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Air Resources Board in the process. The goal of these bidirectional capabilities is to enhance energy reliability, resilience, and better manage demand during periods of grid stress. Additionally, this aligns with California’s broader strategy to transition to zero-emission transportation.
Governor Newsom emphasized in his signing message that these capabilities can help improve the energy system while supporting BEV owners, transforming electric vehicles into a valuable resource for the grid.
The Governor’s signing message said, in part: “Bidirectional capabilities in BEVs have the potential to improve customer energy reliability, resiliency and demand management during electric grid stress events, while supporting our state’s transition to zero-emission transportation.”
Nuvve Applauds Signing of SB 59
Nuvve Holding Corporation, a global leader in the realms of V2G, EVs and clean energy, applauded the signing.
Gregory Poilasne, CEO of Nuvve, said, in part: “Nuvve applauds the recent signing of SB 59, a significant step towards empowering vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This decision not only provides a clear roadmap for our stakeholders but also signals California’s commitment to advancing energy innovation.”
Nuvve Unveiled Groundbreaking AC V2G Technology at Exelon Event in Delaware, Leveraging SAE J3068/2
Nuvve recently made significant advancements in AC V2G solutions at an event hosted by Exelon at the Delmarva Power New Castle Regional Office in Newark, Delaware. The company demonstrated its scalable, practical solutions designed to meet the growing demand for technologies that stabilize the grid, a key part of the global transition to clean energy.
At the event, Nuvve deployed its 3-phase Nuvve PowerPort3 Ultra chargers, showcasing their ability to allow Ford Mach-E EVs to provide grid services while parked. This highlights the benefits of AC bi-directional power flow, in line with the standards outlined in SAE J3068/2. These innovations are designed to meet stringent safety and regulatory requirements, positioning Nuvve as a leader in technological capability and regulatory compliance within the V2G industry.
This development is a major step forward in demonstrating how EVs can not only serve as personal transportation but also act as assets to the electrical grid, helping to balance supply and demand, and contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.
“The ability to harness EVs for grid support provides both revenue opportunities through energy markets and positions Nuvve as a key player in transforming the global energy landscape,” said Gregory Poilasne, CEO of Nuvve. “Our leadership in this space continues to unlock new value for Nuvve as we pave the way for scalable V2G deployments worldwide.”
Nuvve’s proprietary GIVe aggregator software plays an important role in combining multiple EVs into a unified V2G power resource, ensuring that the integration of EVs into the electric grid is both seamless and efficient.
Hamza Lemsaddek, Nuvve’s Vice President of Technology and Astrea AI, said: “This demonstration is a testament to our commitment and investment in R&D since Nuvve’s inception. AC V2G leveraging SAE J3068/2 represents a significant advancement, showcasing reliable, low-cost, and scalable technologies that allow V2G to expand while meeting stringent safety and regulatory requirements. We’re excited to be at the forefront of enabling energy resilience and equity through electrified transportation.”
Nuvve’s leadership in aligning with FERC Order 2222 reinforces its strategic position in capitalizing on the value of distributed energy resources (DERs). At the event hosted by Exelon, Hamza Lemsaddek and Gregory Poilasne led a demonstration that showcased the functionality of Nuvve’s AC V2G technology in real-world scenarios. Attendees, including top executives from Exelon and federal representatives, had the opportunity to witness the commercial and technological potential of these solutions.
This event emphasized Nuvve’s pivotal role in advancing EV infrastructure, while contributing to a sustainable and resilient energy future. The V2G-enabled Ford Mach-E vehicles demonstrated at the event will be closely monitored over the next year to assess their effectiveness in serving both as fleet vehicles and valuable grid assets. This dual functionality aims to deliver long-term value for Nuvve, its customers, and the broader clean energy ecosystem.
