Driving electric vehicle adoption

Polestar Smashes UK Sales Records in September With 114% Year-on-year Growth

The September results are in, and it was a record-breaking month for the Polestar UK team and their retailers. With over 2,400 Polestar vehicles sold, the UK became the first market globally, and in Polestar’s history, to achieve such a milestone in a single month. This marked the most successful month ever for Polestar’s UK business, boasting an impressive 114% year-on-year growth.

Matt Galvin, Managing Director of Polestar UK & Ireland, announced the incredible news ahead of official company news releases on his Linkedin account.

Galvin said: “After a few days at the mother ship discussing our exciting plans for 2025 I’m pleased to report some more great news! September results are in and it was a record breaking month for the team and our retailers!.. We’re a small network and team, and everyone has worked exceptionally hard to deliver these results. Thank you!”

Polestar emerged as the 5th fastest-growing car brand in September and ranked as the 10th best-selling brand for electric vehicles. The month also saw remarkable performance across key areas, including substantial retail growth at 83%, fleet growth reaching 95%, and the best month on record for used car sales. Additionally, the UK business posted a solid 9% year-on-year growth for the third quarter. This growth in market share means EV competitors in the UK are losing market share.

Polestar’s New CEO, Michael Lohscheller

In late August, shortly after announcing the departure of one of its vice presidents, Polestar, the electric vehicle maker, revealed that it would also be replacing its CEO, Thomas Ingenlath. Michael Lohscheller, an experienced executive who had previously led Opel, VinFast, and Nikola, was appointed to succeed Ingenlath. Lohscheller officially joined Polestar on Tuesday, October 1.

On his first day, Lohscheller shared a video in which he emphasized Polestar’s unique position in the market, stating, “I think Polestar is the only premium EV brand in the world, and that needs to be very clearly positioned and clearly understood by people.”

On Lohscheller’s Linkedin account, he said: “Today marks the start of us writing the next chapter for Polestar. I’ve already had the pleasure of visiting several of our markets and getting to know the dedicated people across the business and I can’t wait to get to work! We have a strong brand, a growing model line-up – with three cars already on the road – and a unique position in the GEELY ecosystem. There is no better way to start this next chapter than by driving our brand-new Polestar 3 though the streets of my new hometown.”

Polestar History

Polestar is a Swedish automotive manufacturer focused on producing electric vehicles. The company is owned by Volvo Cars and headquartered in Torslanda, near Gothenburg, Sweden. Unlike traditional automakers, Polestar adopts an “asset-light” approach, meaning it does not have its own manufacturing facility. Instead, it produces its vehicles in factories operated by Volvo Cars or its parent company, Geely Holding, with production facilities located in countries such as China, the U.S., and South Korea.

The brand’s origins trace back to 1996, when it began as Flash Engineering, a Swedish motorsport team competing in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. In 2005, the team was sold and rebranded as Polestar Racing, which eventually developed a production car tuning division known as Polestar Performance AB. In July 2015, Volvo Cars acquired the Polestar brand, transforming it into an electric vehicle manufacturer from 2017 onward. The racing team was rebranded as Cyan Racing but continues to maintain strong ties with Volvo.

Polestar Automotive Holdings UK PLC, the current holding company based in the United Kingdom, was jointly established in 2021 by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding Group. The company’s shares began trading on the Nasdaq exchange under the symbol PSNY on June 24, 2022. However, due to ongoing financial losses, Volvo Cars plans to reduce its stake in Polestar from the current 48.3% to around 18% by the third quarter of 2024, ceding more control to Geely Holding.
