EVinfo.net Interviews Steve Kuh, CEO at Getaway Space, Inc
In November 2024, EVinfo.net had the great pleasure and honor of speaking with Steve Kuh, CEO at Getaway Space, Inc. Kuh answered questions in this interview, so that Getaway Space’s investors can learn more about this exciting opportunity.
Bill Pierce:
We were honored to work with you on your announcement that investing in Getway Space is now
available on StartEngine. What can you tell us about investing in Getaway Space and its return on investment (ROI)? What questions do new or potential investors typically ask and what are your answers to those questions?
Steve Kuh:
Investing inherently involves risks, and StartEngine posts that all potential investors are aware that outcomes may not always align with expectations. However, Getaway Space is well-positioned to succeed, driven by a paradigm shift in the EV market. The increasing demand in the U.S. for EV charging stations enhanced with amenities—such as reservation systems, organic café-style meals, 24/7 security and more—presents a compelling opportunity. While EV adoption is still in its early stages and infrastructure expansion is necessary to meet growing demand, Getaway Space benefits from a significant competitive edge: my extensive background in electrical engineering and electronics.
Over the past 25 years, I’ve served as CEO of a broadcast television electronics company, where products I manufactured a decade ago continue to perform reliably in the field. This experience equips us to shoot for a near 100% uptime goal for EV charging equipment—a crucial factor for success. After all, a charging station is only as valuable as the reliability of its equipment.
Bill Pierce:
Have you visited Rove’s Santa Ana location? What was your opinion? How will Getaway Space be similar or different?
Steve Kuh:
Yes, I’ve been to Rove’s Santa Ana location, and congratulations to Rove on building a new EV DC Fast Charging station from the ground up! It’s an entirely new construction with a mini-market and a rest area. While I believe Getaway Space will offer a unique experience in many ways, Rove has a clean and functional design that will serve Southern California’s EV drivers very well. Facilities like Rove and Getaway Space are essential as we need more EV DC Fast Charging stations.
Getaway Space aims to provide a more restful and inviting atmosphere for visitors to recharge both themselves and their EVs. I don’t view Rove as a competitor because the demand for EV charging infrastructure is so high. For gas-powered vehicles, we have multiple brands like Chevron, 76, Shell, AMCO and others. Similarly, the EV ecosystem is growing with providers such as Tesla, EVgo, Blink, Electrify America, Ionna, Rove, XLR8, Getaway Space, and others.
While industry consolidation may occur over time, the critical challenge lies in the speed of building EV charging stations, which is much slower than the pace of EV production. For example, bringing utility power to a new site can take 12 to 24 months, whereas Tesla produces a Model 3 every 44 seconds.
Bill Pierce:
Do you see the full service EV charging business, such as Getaway space and Rove, growing despite the political change coming to the US in 2025?
Steve Kuh:
Sure. We are privately funded. Rove seems to have raised $150 million from a private equity fund. In contrast, we are raising capital through equity crowdfunding on StartEngine. Additionally, Getaway Space is well-positioned to benefit from location-based utility rebates. However, we are not reliant on federal grants.
While accessing funding through the Department of Transportation’s CFI grants might be beneficial, the process involves more significant delays, bureaucratic hurdles, and restrictive rules that can limit the creativity and flexibility of private enterprises.
Bill Pierce:
Experts are saying EV sales could drop 25-30% if the incoming administration cuts the federal EV tax credit of up to $7,500 for new EV buyers and up to $4,000 for used EV buyers. Should your existing investors or potential new investors be concerned? How would a decrease in US EV sales because of cutting the credit affect your plans for Getaway Space?
Steve Kuh:
Even if EV sales decline in the future due to the potential removal of federal EV tax credits, there are already 3 million EVs in the U.S. that still require charging. In fact, a slowdown in new EV sales could help alleviate some of the current strain on EV charging infrastructure, particularly in high-demand areas like Southern California. At present, long wait times are common, whether at Electrify America stations or even Tesla Superchargers, such as the one in my neighborhood. This highlights the ongoing need for efficient, reliable, and accessible charging solutions.
Bill Pierce:
Will Getaway Space offer its own app? Will your reservation system be available on other apps?
Steve Kuh:
Getaway Space will have its own app, which, while adding to the list of apps users might need, will provide additional features like a reservation system. However, using the app isn’t mandatory—customers can still charge their vehicles using a credit card terminal, making the process simple and accessible. In addition, our members will have the option to just plug in, and the system will automatically recognize the EV and begin to auto-charge.
As for integration with other apps, that’s a straightforward task. We can easily provide an API that allows seamless integration with third-party applications.
Bill Pierce:
We are impressed with your partnership with Urth Caffé as we believe the healthiest food is organic. Does Urth Caffé source its vegetables locally?
Steve Kuh:
Sourcing vegetables locally is essential to ensuring they’re organic and fresh. At Getaway Space, we’re committed to creating a warm and inviting destination. Partnering with Urth Caffé to provide a full café menu would truly elevate the experience, offering the enticing aroma of fresh pastries, organic coffee, and dishes like pizza and pasta. This collaboration perfectly aligns with our mission to deliver eco-conscious solutions without compromising on luxury or comfort. Together, we’re redefining what EV charging can be.
We’re aiming to create a destination, not just another errand stop. This marks a paradigm shift—unlike the traditional gas station experience, where you fuel up and leave in minutes, EV charging takes 10 to 30 minutes. This time opens up opportunities: you can stay in your car to rest, or step into our lounge to relax, work on a laptop, or recharge yourself while your vehicle charges.
Bill Pierce:
We’re impressed you secured NFL star Vince Ferragamo as a brand ambassador. How did that come about?
Steve Kuh:
It turns out that one of Vince’s daughters drives an EV, which helped spark his interest in the industry. Through a mutual connection, I was fortunate to gain his support. Vince’s entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrated through his various real estate ventures, aligns perfectly with Getaway Space’s mission. His involvement reflects a shared commitment to a greener future.
Getaway Space is proud to collaborate with Vince as we strive to lead in cleantech innovation. His star power and leadership help amplify our efforts to raise awareness and inspire action in sustainability. Together, we attended the RE+ show in September 2024, where we hosted a poster-signing ceremony. Through these shared experiences, we built a strong relationship, and Vince officially became the Getaway Space Brand Ambassador.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Vince’s home vineyard, where we conducted an interview to discuss his vision and plans for involvement with Getaway Space. The setting provided the perfect backdrop to delve into his passion for sustainability and his commitment to supporting our mission. It was a great opportunity to explore how his leadership and influence will help shape Getaway Space’s future as a pioneer in cleantech innovation.
Bill Pierce:
Any last words?
Steve Kuh:
I strongly urge the automobile industry to collaborate with Getaway Space, Rove, and other emerging EV charging companies to extend their EV charging credit programs to include new charging networks. Currently, most new EVs come with a $2,000 charging credit at Electrify America stations, valid for the first 2-3 years of ownership. This incentive, while beneficial, is a major reason for the long wait times at these stations, as the demand exceeds the available capacity.
When I’ve reached out to automakers to explore the possibility of opening up these credits to networks like Getaway Space, the response has been negative. This lack of collaboration is a missed opportunity. Expanding access to these credits would not only help ease congestion but also give EV owners more charging options, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction and supporting the adoption of new and innovative charging infrastructure.
Bill Pierce:
EVinfo.net also urges the automobile industry to collaborate with Getaway Space, Rove, and other emerging EV charging companies to extend their EV charging credit programs to include new charging networks. Thank you Steve for the interview. One of the greatest parts of our work in the EV industry is meeting and working with the industry’s top leaders, through our marketing services.
