Rivian Adventure Network Opens Its First EV Chargers for All EVs

On December 5, 2024, Rivian announced the launch of its next-generation Rivian Adventure Network charging locations, now open to non-Rivian electric vehicles (EVs) in addition to the company’s R1T pickup and R1S SUV. These chargers feature a new design compatible with any EV in North America, marking a significant step toward broadening access to fast EV charging and supporting transportation electrification.

The first of these sites, the Joshua Tree Charging Outpost in California, is now open, with additional locations planned in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York by year-end. Designed for rapid charging up to 900 volts, the chargers support CCS connectors and, with an automaker-approved adapter, North American Charging Standard (NACS)-equipped vehicles. Future hardware updates will add native NACS (SAE J3400) support.

Key features include larger displays, tap-to-pay functionality, and compatibility with or without the Rivian app. Rivian drivers will retain their seamless authentication experience. Positioned at strategic locations, these chargers aim to make driving electric more convenient for adventure-seekers across the U.S.

“Since the beginning, we’ve understood that creating great products like the R1T and R1S only made up half the equation,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. “To achieve widespread electrification, you also need a really good charging network. Now, we’re excited to bring the Rivian Adventure Network–with its ease of use and exceptional reliability–to other EV drivers around North America, investing in a future where charging on the road will be simple, sustainable, and convenient.”

Rivian’s new chargers meet federal and state design and siting requirements, making them eligible for infrastructure funding. This support will help Rivian expand its Rivian Adventure Network, emphasizing reliability and accessibility for all EV drivers.

These chargers will also serve as a growing revenue source for Rivian while supporting sustainability goals. Charging at these sites is backed by 100% renewable energy matching through Rivian’s selective renewable energy procurement process. This allows EV drivers to contribute directly to grid decarbonization, playing an active role in advancing emissions-free transportation.

Rivian’s Renewable Energy Matching Program

Rivian is offering a special incentive for new customers: if you take delivery of an R1T or R1S by the end of the year, the company will match up to 10,000 miles of driving with 100% renewable energy.

This initiative ensures that every charge supports impactful renewable energy projects in the U.S., such as the Champion Wind Farm in Texas, further aligning Rivian’s mission with sustainable and clean transportation solutions.

American Drivers Seek a Sustainable Future

The EV industry is experiencing a pivotal moment, with U.S. electric vehicle (EV) sales surging—nearly 1 in 9 new cars sold in the third quarter of 2024 were electric. To better understand this shift, Rivian partnered with Talker News to conduct a survey of 2,000 American car owners, including 1,000 parents.

The research highlights a shared concern among respondents about the effects of climate change on future generations. Many are actively looking for ways to contribute to solutions, reflecting growing public interest in sustainability during this critical transition in the automotive market.

Rivian’s research with Talker News reveals important insights into car owners’ priorities during the EV transition:

Top Concerns for Future Generations: Climate change ranked as the No. 1 concern for 36% of respondents, surpassing the economy (25%), evolving social norms (13%), and global instability (11%).

Impact of Purchases: Nearly two-thirds (63%) believe their purchases affect future generations’ quality of life, whether environmentally, financially, or both.

Proactive Environmental Action: 81% are actively looking for ways to protect the environment.

Interest in Eco-Friendly Cars: 48% want their next car to be more environmentally friendly, but 68% also want a car that suits their active lifestyle.

Transportation Realities: 74% of respondents say alternative transportation modes are impractical for their family’s needs, with parents being slightly more likely to say this (76% vs. 70%).

Skepticism About Current Options: 34% of car owners are unsure if their ideal car exists.

Climate as a Buying Factor: 56% say a vehicle’s positive effects on the climate influence their purchase decision.

These findings highlight the balance between environmental priorities, practicality, and lifestyle needs in shaping consumer attitudes toward EVs.

Rivian CEO Speaks Out on Climate Change

The fight against global climate change has a strong and influential new leader. Robert Joseph “RJ” Scaringe is an American entrepreneur and engineer, and the founder and CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian. Scaringe released an informative video about the very harmful effects of global climate change. In the video, Scaringe explains how electric vehicles (EVs) are very important to mitigate the effects of this unprecedented and very dangerous problem, threatening the globe and humanity’s survival in a wide variety of ways.
