Pre-Summit workshops are not included with a pass for the EV Charging Summit and Expo event taking place on March 25–27, 2025. Registration for the workshops below, occurring on March 25, must be done separately.

Workshop A: Foundations of EV Charging: Importance of Networked Chargers, Driving Reliability, and OCPI, 9:00 am–11:00 am

Join NovaCHARGE for a comprehensive two-hour session led by Will Rigsby, offering an in-depth look at the foundations of EV charging. Drawing from over 15 years of experience in the EV charging industry, Rigsby will cover essential topics, including the role of networked chargers, their reliability, and the growing significance of OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface).

The session will focus on practical insights into creating sustainable ROI with networked chargers, selecting reliable hardware, and understanding the importance of roaming agreements and maintenance. Workshop B: Understanding Electric Capacity & Calculating Your Charging Needs, 9:00 am–11:00 am

This session, featuring speaker Will “WD” Scherle, Director of Decarbonization, Soulful Synergy, LLC., will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Transportation Electrification Feasibility Studies (TEFS) and their role in determining the electrical capacity needed to support Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations. It will focus on the importance of assessing existing site conditions, such as available electrical capacity and parking areas, to ensure a successful EV charging installation. Participants will learn how to inspect these critical site conditions and understand best practices for installing EV charging stations.

Additionally, the course will cover the process of transitioning from an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle to an electric vehicle, focusing on the associated charging requirements. Attendees will gain practical skills in calculating their charging needs, understanding the costs per kWh for different EV charging levels (1, 2, and 3), and exploring the potential cost savings from participating in Time of Use (TOU) EV charging programs.

Workshop K: EV Politics: New Polling on the Political Fight Over EVs and How America Can Overcome it, 9:00 am–11:00 am

Nationally known political consultant and American EV Jobs Alliance CEO Mike Murphy will present new national polling data conducted after the 2024 Presidential election that explains why EVs have become a political football and what can be done to overcome it. Topics include the public perceptions of EV vs ICE brands, the fascinating consumer re-evaluation of Elon Musk, and a summary of which pro-EV messages work — and don’t work — to break down the political divide slowing EV adoption in America.

Murphy will also talk about how charging has become a major issue among consumers considering an EV for long-distance travel and for consumers living in multi-family buildings. It’s an insightful and entertaining multi-media presentation seen by automotive OEM CEOs, the SAE, leading politicians in Washington DC, and many EV advocates.

Workshop C: EV Fleets 101: Building a Strategic Roadmap for Medium & Heavy Duty Fleet Electrification, 11:00 am–1:00 pm

In this session, Todd Wickstrum, Director of E-Mobility Business Development at Nextran Truck Centers, will guide fleet owners and leaders through the process of electrifying their fleets. Many fleet operators are eager to explore the potential of electric vehicles but lack experience with the technology, leading to confusion and uncertainty about the next steps. The workshop will cover four different asset classes, including Class 6 box trucks for final mile delivery, Class 8 tractor-trailers for final mile delivery, Class 8 refuse collection trucks, and Class 8 yard tractors.

Wickstrum will discuss the key considerations for electrifying each of these asset classes and provide recommendations for creating a strategic roadmap tailored to each operation. Participants will gain insights into the critical factors needed to build a successful fleet electrification plan, including available tools for evaluating EV options, acquisition strategies, and considerations for infrastructure, charging, and utilities.

Workshop D: A Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for Federal and State Funding, 11:00 am–1:00 pm

This workshop will help attendees navigate the often complex process of applying for federal and state grants aimed at supporting EV charging infrastructure. The session will provide a comprehensive understanding of the various funding opportunities available, such as grants, incentives, and programs tailored to specific project scopes.

Participants will learn how to identify key partnerships that can strengthen their grant applications and enhance project feasibility. The session will also offer step-by-step guidance on mastering the application process, covering essential documentation, project timelines, and budget considerations. Additionally, attendees will review real-world case studies of successful funding applications, learning from the strategies and best practices that led to funding approval.

Workshop J: Essential Electrical Code Considerations in Commercial and Residential Installations, 11:00 am–1:00 pm

In this session, Marty Schumacher, Owner and Electrical Training Specialist at M.S. Electrical Training LLC, will explore the electrical code challenges encountered in both commercial and residential installations. Using specific case studies, Marty will highlight common violations and offer strategies for overcoming challenges and addressing interpretations with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). Topics will include load calculations, disconnect rules, UL Standards, parking lots, GFCI requirements, installation instructions, and other installation regulations. Marty will also discuss state-specific EV mandates, such as those in California, Maryland, and other regions. With his extensive experience on UL’s EV Technical Panel (UL2231) and having conducted hundreds of electrical inspections for EVs at local, state, and federal levels, Marty will provide valuable insights into ensuring compliance and best practices for EV installations.

Workshop E: V2G 101: Scaling Bidirectional Charging Infrastructure, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm

This session, led by Zach Woogen, Interim Executive Director of the Vehicle-Grid Integration Council, will explore the transformative potential of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology as electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to grow. V2G allows for bi-directional energy flow between EVs and the grid, enabling EVs to act as mobile power sources for energy storage, grid support, and demand response. The session will cover the fundamentals of V2G, providing participants with the knowledge to explore business opportunities and navigate associated challenges.

Participants will learn about the value proposition of V2G, including its benefits for utilities, automakers, and consumers, and how it creates new flexibility in energy management. The session will also delve into how stakeholders can generate revenue through V2G, whether by participating in energy markets or providing grid services. Real-world use cases will be discussed across residential, commercial, and industrial applications, alongside an exploration of the barriers to adoption, such as regulatory, technological, and market obstacles.

The workshop will cover key technical challenges, from troubleshooting common hardware and software issues to understanding the latest industry standards for EV chargers. Attendees will gain actionable insights and best practices for ensuring optimal performance in their EV charging installations.

The session will address essential site considerations and due diligence requirements, techniques for troubleshooting, and strategies for long-term maintenance to ensure the reliability of charging stations.
