Komatsu Shows All-Electric, Autonomous Underwater Bulldozer at CES 2025
Komatsu introduced a groundbreaking innovation at CES 2025: an all-electric, fully autonomous underwater bulldozer. This new model represents a significant upgrade to a mechanical version originally created in the 1970s, which was powered by diesel. In response to the growing global demand for sustainable solutions, the company has transitioned to electric power.
The prototype bulldozer is currently designed to operate at a depth of about 22.96 feet (7 meters), a limitation imposed by GPS systems. However, Komatsu is working to enhance this capability, with plans to extend its operational depth to 164 feet (50 meters). The machine is equipped with a 450 kWh battery, which could potentially be increased to 500 kWh, providing up to six hours of runtime. Once the battery is depleted, it can be recharged in just four hours.
This underwater bulldozer is intended for a range of applications, including river dredging, ecosystem restoration, and disaster preparedness. The unveiling of this technology marks a significant leap in the development of sustainable and autonomous construction machinery, showcasing Komatsu’s commitment to innovation in extreme environments.
“As a proving ground for breakthrough technologies and global innovators, CES offers a unique opportunity to highlight some of the leading-edge concepts we have in the works, as well as the Komatsu innovations that are actively helping shape the world around us,” said Taisuke Kusaba, CTO and President, Development Division, Komatsu Ltd.
At CES 2025, Komatsu made a historic debut as a first-time CES exhibitor, by showcasing two groundbreaking innovations: the first physical display of its in-development lunar construction equipment and a glimpse into the future of underwater construction. These displays reflect the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and expanding beyond traditional industries.
By presenting these cutting-edge technologies, Komatsu aims to attract a new generation of diverse talent, looking to inspire individuals who want to make a meaningful impact on a global scale. As a company with operations in over 150 countries, Komatsu offers unique opportunities to work in critical industries like construction, mining, and forestry, while partnering with top-tier industry leaders. These efforts are part of Komatsu’s strategy to solidify its role as an innovator in the field, appealing to future talent eager to contribute to advancing global infrastructure and sustainability.
“The core industries we serve, construction and mining, offer plenty of extreme applications that push our engineers, programmers and designers to problem solve ground-breaking use of technology and product design to stay ahead of the needs of our customers,” said Kusaba.
