Evolito to Supply Electric Propulsion Motors for Flying Whales’ Innovative Airships
Evolito Limited announced a partnership with airship company Flying Whales. This partnership is a huge step forward in sustainable aviation, particularly in the field of cargo transport. The collaboration highlights how advanced electric propulsion technologies can be integrated into large, innovative airships like the LCA60T, which is set to become a game-changer in the way heavy and oversized cargo is moved, especially in hard-to-reach areas with limited infrastructure. Flying Whales is a French aeronautic start-up.
The Evolito Limited D250 electric motor’s exceptional power and torque density make it a perfect fit for the LCA60T, which will rely on 32 of these motors to deliver the necessary power for transporting loads of up to 60 tonnes. The D250’s lightweight design and impressive energy efficiency play a key role in minimizing the environmental impact of air cargo transportation.
Flying Whales’ goal is to create an environmentally sustainable mode of transportation, and with Evolito’s cutting-edge electric propulsion technology, this is achievable. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting greener logistics, this partnership supports efforts to address the ongoing challenges posed by traditional, fossil fuel-dependent transport methods.
Evolito’s successful pursuit of regulatory approvals from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority, and their progress towards achieving POA and ISO9001 certification, positions them as a key player in the electric aviation sector. These certifications will help Flying Whales navigate the certification process for their airships and reduce costs.
Evolito’s electric propulsion motors are the smallest and lightest in their class. The D250 offers industry leading power density of 18.5kW/kg providing 240kW peak power and weighing a light 13kg.
Vincent Guibout, CEO of Flying Whales said, “When designing an airship, weight is critical. In the three years we have been working together, Evolito has demonstrated the ability to deliver best in class power density from its unique axial flux electric motors along with the ability to ramp production to meet our forecast requirements. There is an excellent synergy between our teams – we share the same passion for enabling electric flight through engineering excellence and innovation – and I look forward to working with Evolito towards the first LCA60T flight and beyond into production and commercial operation.”
This collaboration represents a promising future for both companies and for sustainable aviation in general. The combination of Flying Whales’ airship design and Evolito’s powerful, lightweight electric motors is a great example of innovation addressing real-world problems, with the potential to revolutionize cargo logistics while reducing the carbon footprint of transportation.
Dr. Chris Harris, Evolito CEO and co-founder said, “Flying Whales’ LCA60T airship is a truly inspirational aircraft, demonstrating that electric flight can help solve global challenges – from reducing harmful emissions to delivering critical infrastructure sustainably. Evolito’s unique axial-flux technology enables a new class of lightweight, compact and high-performance electric motor, opening up many new aircraft designs, mission profiles and use-cases -setting new standards in electric propulsion for Aerospace.”
