Driving electric vehicle adoption

BYD Unveils 1,000V Platform Capable of Fast Charging EVs 248 Miles in 5 Minutes

Reuters reported on March 17, 2025, that China’s BYD unveiled its new “super e-platform,” which promises to revolutionize the way we think about charging EVs. At a recent event livestreamed from the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu revealed that the new platform would allow EVs to charge at an unprecedented speed — potentially as quickly as refueling a gas-powered car. This breakthrough could change the landscape of EV adoption, addressing one of the biggest concerns for electric car owners: charging time.

The super e-platform is capable of delivering peak charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts (kW), enabling EVs that are equipped with it to charge for 5 minutes and travel up to 400 kilometers (249 miles). This means drivers could gain a significant range boost in the time it takes to fill up a gas tank, making long trips in electric cars more convenient than ever.

BYD’s move comes at a time when fast-charging technology has become a critical factor in encouraging the widespread adoption of EVs. While concerns about range anxiety — the fear of running out of battery while on the road — have already been mitigated by advances in battery technology, the speed at which vehicles can be charged remains one of the key barriers to EV adoption. With the super e-platform, BYD is addressing this issue head-on, offering a solution that could make the process as fast and seamless as traditional fuel refueling.

“In order to completely solve our user’s charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refueling time of petrol vehicles. This is the first time in the industry that the unit of megawatt (charge) has been achieved on charging power,” BYD founder Wang Chuanfu said.

Two New EV Models to Launch with the Super E-Platform

To showcase the potential of its new charging architecture, BYD will roll out two new models equipped with the super e-platform — the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. These vehicles will be priced starting at 270,000 yuan (approximately $37,329) and are expected to be a game-changer for consumers looking for quick charging times without sacrificing performance or range.

A New Charging Network Across China

In addition to introducing the super e-platform, BYD also announced its ambitious plans to build a vast network of ultra-fast charging stations across China. The company plans to install over 4,000 “ultra-fast charging piles” — charging units capable of supporting the super e-platform — across the country. However, BYD did not disclose a timeline or investment figure for this major expansion of its charging infrastructure.

Currently, BYD owners rely largely on third-party charging facilities or those built by other automakers. With the new charging network, BYD is aiming to ensure that its customers have access to convenient, fast-charging options, further reducing barriers to EV adoption.

Competition in the EV Charging Space

While BYD’s investment in charging infrastructure is significant, it’s important to note that it isn’t the only player in the market. Smaller Chinese EV makers such as Nio, Li Auto, Xpeng, and Zeekr have also been actively building their own networks of charging stations for years. This growing competition in the charging space will help create a more robust and accessible EV infrastructure for consumers, making it easier than ever to own and operate an electric vehicle.

BYD’s Growing Influence in the EV Market

BYD has been one of the leaders in the global shift toward electric mobility. In 2024, the company sold a staggering 4.2 million vehicles, with a significant portion of those sales being plug-in hybrids. Looking ahead, BYD is targeting sales of 5-6 million units in 2025. The company’s push for ultra-fast charging capabilities, along with its expanding charging network, is a clear indication that it is committed to maintaining its leadership position in the rapidly growing EV market.

BYD’s new super e-platform and the development of its own ultra-fast charging network could be pivotal in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, making them more practical and convenient for consumers. With rapid charging speeds, an expanding infrastructure network, and affordable new EV models, BYD is setting the stage for the next wave of electric mobility in China and beyond. As the company continues to innovate, it’s clear that the future of transportation is electric — and BYD is at the forefront of that transformation.

EVinfo.net’s Take

Its blazingly clear that for years now, China has been at the forefront of global automotive innovation, for one simple reason, its support of EV adoption. China’s automotive industry is gaining quickly in global automotive market share, as America falls further behind. For example, EVinfo.net reported just a few days ago about Geely Auto’s expansion into the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Its also very clear that since January 20, 2025, the United States is not prioritizing its automotive industry, but rather letting that important industry decline, in favor of supporting the oil industry.

During 2020 to 2024, Democrats moved America forward in the most historic, far-reaching, and important clean energy legislation in history, supporting vital clean energy initiatives such as electric vehicles and solar power.

If you are in favor of putting the US last in the world in these regards, allowing the American automotive and energy industries to decline, vote Republican. If you’d rather that the US find a more stable footing and become more competitive in these regards, vote Democrat. Backwards or forwards, the choice is up to you.
