Slate Auto’s $25k EV Pickup Truck
Slate Auto, the disruptive electric vehicle startup backed by Jeff Bezos, recently made its public debut in Long Beach, California, unveiling a radical new take on what an EV can be. Their first model, the Blank Slate, is an electric truck that breaks from the high-tech, high-cost trend dominating the market. With a base price under $20,000 after federal tax credits, it’s built to be functional, affordable, and customizable—more like a blank canvas than a finished product. It skips power windows, touchscreens, and even paint in favor of simplicity and modularity, inviting buyers to shape the vehicle to their needs over time. Reservations are just $50 and fully refundable, with deliveries targeted for late 2026.The company’s representatives spoke with EVinfo.net at its ACT Expo booth.

Under the hood, the Blank Slate is modest but practical, offering up to 240 miles of range with an optional battery upgrade and a compact design that includes a 5-foot truck bed and a 7-cubic-foot front trunk. But the real innovation lies in its customization philosophy: buyers can wrap the vehicle in any design, snap on over 100 accessories, and even convert it into a five-seat SUV without needing a mechanic. Safety features like emergency braking and airbags are standard, proving affordability doesn’t mean compromising essentials. Backed by over $111 million and heavyweight investors including Bezos and Mark Walter, Slate Auto is betting that a no-frills, DIY approach to EVs will resonate with a public priced out of today’s over-engineered options.

Ampcontrol and NACFE Release Whitepaper: ‘Smart Charging for Electric Depots’
At ACT Expo, Ampcontrol announced that the company and the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) released a pioneering white paper titled “Smart Charging for Electric Depots,” addressing the multifaceted challenges of fleet electrification. Chief among these is the significant inadequacy of current grid infrastructure. Large electric depots require immense power—often up to 5 megawatts—far beyond the capacity of existing industrial sites. Expanding grid access involves complex coordination with utilities and lengthy regulatory approvals, resulting in project delays and cost overruns that threaten the viability of electric freight. The report emphasizes that these systemic limitations not only hinder short-term deployments but also jeopardize long-term electrification goals.
To overcome these barriers, the report advocates for the widespread adoption of smart charging and energy management technologies. These tools enable fleet operators to optimize charging schedules, minimize peak demand costs, and integrate renewable energy sources—ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and grid resilience. Backed by real-world case studies and data from Ampcontrol’s extensive field experience with major OEMs, the report offers actionable insights for fleets, utilities, and policymakers. It reinforces smart charging as the critical enabler of scalable electric truck operations and presents a unified call to action for industry collaboration. By leveraging proven technologies and coordinated planning, the path to a zero-emission freight future becomes clearer and more attainable.

WEX Exhibited How to Simplify EV Charging Transactions at ACT
At the 2025 ACT Expo, WEX showcased its expanding role in enabling the transition to cleaner, more efficient commercial transportation through integrated payment solutions and data-driven fleet management tools. As fleets adopt electric and alternative fuel vehicles, WEX is positioning itself as a crucial enabler by simplifying the complex landscape of energy payments. At the event, the company highlighted enhancements to its mobility platform, which now supports mixed-fuel fleets by integrating EV charging transactions, traditional fuel purchases, and maintenance expenses into a single, seamless billing and reporting system. This level of consolidation helps fleet managers track total cost of ownership, improve driver compliance, and streamline operational decision-making in a rapidly evolving transportation environment.

In February, WEX sounded the closing bell on the NYSE.
Recently, WEX said: “We marked a major milestone: 20 years as a public company. Our IPO in 2005 was a bold step that fueled decades of growth, innovation, and success. We’ve expanded globally, introduced new products, and today, we support clients all over the world. With more than 6,500 WEXers across 16 countries and a legacy of over 40 years, we’re looking forward to the next 20.”
WEX also used the ACT Expo stage to emphasize its strategic partnerships with charging networks and OEMs, helping ensure drivers have access to a broad and reliable charging infrastructure. These collaborations are part of WEX’s broader commitment to helping fleets scale electrification without compromising efficiency or financial oversight. In panel discussions and private demos, WEX experts shared insights on navigating the early stages of fleet electrification—especially when balancing uptime, range needs, and cost predictability. With a focus on flexibility, visibility, and control, WEX continues to evolve as a key technology partner in the commercial transportation sector’s decarbonization journey.
Hilary Tayor, CEO of WattsUp, Offers Thoughts on ACT
EVinfo.net met with Hilary Taylor, CEO of WattsUp, who spoke about ACT.
“The conversations at ACT shifted from deployment to performance, data, & reliability— how do we make EV infrastructure not just exist, but actually work. That’s the leap the industry needs right now,” Taylor said.
“Making sure our infrastructure works requires all critical stakeholders have a seat at the table. At ACT & in general, the technician’s role is consistently downplayed when they should be a vital part of the conversation. We need to have more conversations on what tools and data are needed to empower the electrified workforce,” continued Taylor.
Taylor added: “Addressing the disparate tools and data silos plaguing the industry is vital to long term success. AI took the forefront of the discussion, but not enough emphasis is put on platforms and tools that bridge the major gaps between stakeholders.”

WattsUp delivers a cutting-edge AI-driven predictive maintenance solution designed to significantly boost the reliability of EV chargers. By continuously monitoring system performance, the technology detects anomalies in real time, accurately predicts potential failures, and takes proactive measures to resolve issues before they impact users. The system autonomously orders necessary replacement parts and schedules technician visits, ensuring seamless operation with minimal downtime—all without requiring any user intervention.
