Driving electric vehicle adoption

Milence Unveils First Megawatt Charging System at Landvetter Hub, Sweden

During The 38th International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS38) in Gothenburg, Milence marked a major milestone in the electrification of European freight transport by unveiling the first public demonstration of the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) at its newly expanded Landvetter hub near Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 16, 2025. The event showcased a fully electric Volvo FH Aero Electric truck charging with the new MCS standard—signaling the beginning of a new era for high-power, long-haul zero-emission trucking.

Milence, the joint venture building Europe’s largest public charging network for electric heavy-duty vehicles, has doubled its CCS (Combined Charging System) capacity at the Landvetter hub and added MCS capability, making the site one of the most advanced electric truck charging stations in Europe.

Sweden: Leading the Charge in Heavy-Duty Electrification

Sweden continues to set the pace for truck electrification in Europe, with more than 1,000 electric long-haul trucks already in operation and over 150 public charging stations nationwide—the highest number on the continent. Milence’s investment in Landvetter builds upon this leadership, reinforcing Sweden’s position as a pioneer in fossil-free freight and a key player in the development of a sustainable transport ecosystem.

“Public charging infrastructure is the key enabler for long-haul electric transport, and its success depends on high-power charging solutions deployed where demand is emerging fastest. That’s why Milence follows a corridor-first strategy, rolling out the fastest available technology along Europe’s most critical freight routes. With four operational hubs now live in Sweden, we already cover key corridors linking Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. The expansion of our Landvetter hub with Megawatt Charging brings us one step closer to establishing Europe’s first MCS-enabled corridor”, stated Anja van Niersen, CEO Milence.

Megawatt Charging System: Powering the Future

The MCS standard was developed to meet the intense energy demands of battery electric heavy-duty vehicles. With a capacity of up to 1,440 kW (1,500 A, 1,000 V), MCS enables fast and efficient charging—bringing truck batteries from 20% to 80% in just 30 to 45 minutes. This fits within mandated driver rest periods in the EU, maintaining compliance while maximizing fleet productivity.

The MCS equipment at Landvetter is developed by Power Electronics and joins existing deployments at Milence hubs in Zwolle (Netherlands) and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium).

Building Europe’s First Electric Freight Corridor

The Landvetter hub’s MCS capability brings Milence closer to completing Europe’s first high-power MCS corridor, which will stretch from Antwerp to Stockholm—covering over 1,500 km across two major Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridors. This corridor is a central piece of Milence’s commitment under the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) to deploy 284 MCS chargers across 71 sites in 10 member states.

Interoperability and Industry Readiness

The demonstration, featuring Volvo’s new FH Aero Electric truck with 780 kWh of battery capacity and up to 600 km range, represents a key moment in establishing MCS as a reliable, interoperable solution for the logistics sector. With a charging time of roughly 40 minutes, this new generation of trucks can integrate seamlessly into existing logistics workflows.

“This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport. Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution”, says Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks.

“Today’s successful charging session is a proof point for MCS charging. Together with Milence, we are now ready to deliver a real breakthrough thanks to close collaboration. Today we witnessed that the MCS technology is here, and it holds the power to reduce charging times significantly for customers, and by that also reducing the total cost of ownership. We will continue to work side by side to expand the public charging network in Sweden and rest of Europe, standing by our commitments together on this electric journey. Partnership is the new leadership!” – Kristina Nilsson, SVP Charging & Infrastructure Solutions Volvo Energy.

A Driver-Centric Charging Experience

In addition to cutting-edge charging capabilities, the Landvetter hub was designed with drivers in mind. The site includes 8 CCS bays and 1 MCS bay. Amenities such as restrooms, showers, a lounge area, vending machines, and free WiFi are available.

Flexible and transparent payment options, including support for multiple eMobility Service Providers (eMSPs), on-site payment terminals, and the Milence Charge Card are also offered. A competitive flat rate of €0.399 per kWh (excl. VAT) for both CCS and MCS charging is charged to users.

With the successful launch of MCS charging in Sweden, Milence continues to lead Europe’s charge toward a fossil-free freight future—delivering scalable, driver-friendly infrastructure that supports the growing population of electric trucks on Europe’s roads. The Landvetter hub is more than a charging station—it’s a powerful step forward for clean logistics across the continent.
