Slate Auto is an American electric vehicle startup founded in 2022 and headquartered in Troy, Michigan. Backed by high-profile investors including Jeff Bezos, the company has positioned itself as a disruptor in the EV space by offering a radically simplified, customizable electric pickup truck designed for affordability, personalization, and U.S. manufacturing.

The company’s core goal is to “blank slate” the traditional auto model, delivering a vehicle platform that is cost-effective, modular, and adaptable to the owner’s needs. On its website, Slate describes its product as “a vehicle in its essential form, a blank canvas for personalization, so you can get exactly the Slate you want, with the features you want, at the price you want.” Rather than building multiple variants, Slate focuses on a single base vehicle and offers a wide range of add-ons and conversion kits that allow owners to tailor the vehicle to their lifestyle.

The company’s first product is the Slate Truck, a compact electric pickup revealed in April 2025. Configurations include a battery pack capable of about 150 miles of range, with an optional upgrade to around 240 miles. Slate plans more than 100 accessories, including body kits and wrap options, allowing owners to personalize their vehicles extensively. Production is planned at a facility in Warsaw, Indiana, with targets of up to 150,000 units annually.

Slate Auto aims to address a gap in the EV market by offering affordable electric vehicles that are simple, versatile, and built for customization. By simplifying the base vehicle and shifting value toward optional modules and accessories, the company hopes to reduce entry costs and appeal to design-conscious and budget-aware buyers. Recent changes in federal tax credits have shifted the starting price from under $20,000 to the mid-$20,000s, which may affect the original affordability goal.

Deliveries of the Slate Truck are expected to begin in late 2026. As the company ramps up production and builds out its accessory and customization ecosystem, its success will depend on its ability to execute manufacturing plans, ensure supply chain stability, and stand out in a highly competitive electric vehicle market.
