ABB’s First Facility in Spain With Zero Operational Emissions Adds EV Charging and Solar Under Mission to Zero

ABB has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability strategy by transforming its Oiartzun facility into the company’s first site in Spain to achieve zero operational emissions. The factory, which produces wiring accessories and smart home solutions, now operates entirely on renewable electricity and has added on-site solar generation and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, reinforcing ABB’s commitment to industrial decarbonization.

The milestone is part of ABB’s global Mission to Zero program, which aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from operations. At Oiartzun, fossil fuels have been fully removed through a combination of on-site renewable power and the purchase of certified green electricity. More than 580 kWp of photovoltaic capacity has been installed, enabling the facility to meet a significant share of its energy demand with locally generated solar power and demonstrating a practical path toward cleaner manufacturing.

“Achieving zero operational emissions at our Oiartzun site marks another important step on ABB’s Mission to Zero journey,” explains Mike Mustapha, President, ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division.

Mustapha continued: “As our first facility in Spain to reach this milestone and one of many sites worldwide advancing toward the same goal, it shows how we are turning ambition into action: electrifying our operations, embedding circular design and using digital energy management to make decarbonisation real. Through this progress, we aim to set a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing and help customers accelerate their own transition to net zero.”

Electrification plays a central role in the site’s modernization. New EV charging infrastructure supports ABB’s transition toward an electrified vehicle fleet and more sustainable logistics, aligning the facility with broader industry shifts toward electric mobility. The upgrade of the 110-year-old factory illustrates how long-established industrial sites can be retrofitted to meet modern environmental standards without compromising productivity.

Since 2019, the Oiartzun plant has reduced overall energy consumption by 42% through a structured roadmap focused on electrification, process automation, heat recovery, and operational optimization. ABB’s building automation and energy management technologies have been deployed to optimize lighting, heating, and power distribution, while the ABB eLink platform provides real-time visibility into energy use to support data-driven decision-making.

The facility has also strengthened its focus on circularity and resource efficiency. It holds ISO 50001 certification for energy management and has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill status. Under ABB’s EcoSolutions framework, products manufactured at the site incorporate high levels of recycled and recyclable materials. The factory further supports sustainability through collaboration with suppliers, technology partners, and local community initiatives, reinforcing ABB’s broader commitment to responsible and sustainable manufacturing.
