Driving electric vehicle adoption

City of Hoboken, NJ Partners With New Electric Vehicle Charging Operator, Jolt Charge

On January 2, 2026, Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and the City of Hoboken announced that Jolt Charge, Inc. will assume operation of 14 on-street electric vehicle charging stations beginning January 5. The transition is expected to provide enhanced services for residents and drivers while generating additional revenue for the City.

The change follows approval by the Hoboken City Council and a competitive procurement process designed to ensure the continued operation and maintenance of the City’s on-street EV charging infrastructure at no cost to taxpayers.

The stations were originally installed under a contract authorized by the City Council in July 2022, when the City’s prior partner, Volta, deployed 14 on-street chargers across Hoboken at no cost to the City. Since October 2023, the stations have supported more than 10,000 charging sessions and enabled over 700,000 electric vehicle miles driven.

Under the new agreement, Jolt will operate and maintain all 14 charging stations at no cost to the City and will pay Hoboken 54 percent more in monthly rent than the previous operator. The increased revenue will be reinvested in essential municipal services, infrastructure improvements, and sustainability initiatives, supporting the City’s Climate Action goals of achieving net-zero energy by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

The initial term of the contract is two years, with three optional one-year extensions. In addition to operations and maintenance, Jolt will provide enhanced features including monthly maintenance reporting, charging station wait-time predictions through the Jolt mobile app, and other customer-focused services.
