EV Drivers in MA V2G Pilot Earn Incentives While Supporting Grid Reliability and Affordability
Eversource, National Grid, EnergyHub, Sunrun, and The Mobility House, bold leaders in grid flexibility and smart charging technology, announced a joint effort to test vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities in Massachusetts. The companies made the announcement on July 23, 2026.
Through the effort, eligible residential customers served by Eversource and National Grid will be able to enroll V2G-capable electric vehicles in the ConnectedSolutions program.
ConnectedSolutions currently helps reduce stress on the electric grid by using flexible energy resources such as smart thermostats, battery storage systems, and commercial and industrial demand response assets. The new pilot will explore how bidirectional EV charging can expand those capabilities and provide additional grid support.
With more than 150,000 electric vehicles already operating across Massachusetts and a growing number of models equipped with bidirectional charging technology, the state represents a significant and expanding energy resource. V2G technology allows EVs to return stored electricity to the grid when needed, transforming parked vehicles into distributed energy assets that can help strengthen grid reliability.
During periods of high electricity demand, participating EVs will be able to discharge energy back to the grid, helping utilities manage peak loads, improve system stability, and reduce overall grid costs. The potential benefits of V2G are substantial, and drivers who participate will receive financial incentives in recognition of the value their vehicles provide.
National Grid is already incorporating V2G technology into ConnectedSolutions through light- and medium-duty fleet applications, beginning with school buses. Eversource is also working with school districts to explore similar opportunities through its ConnectedSolutions+ program.

The challenge now is scaling it across the United States. With utilities and industry leaders moving beyond pilot projects and into broader deployments, the V2G revolution appears to be gaining momentum faster than ever before.
