Mercedes Unveils 2028 GLA for U.S. Market, Featuring EV and Hybrid Power
Mercedes-Benz is preparing to bring an all-new generation of its compact crossover to the U.S. market in the second half of 2027. The redesigned 2028 GLA will be offered with both hybrid and fully electric powertrains, marking an important step in the automaker’s broader strategy to expand its next-generation EV lineup. While pricing has not yet been announced, the GLA has traditionally served as one of Mercedes-Benz’s most accessible entry points into the luxury vehicle segment.
The new model arrives as Mercedes-Benz accelerates its transition to a software-defined vehicle platform. Following the introduction of updated electric versions of the CLA, C-Class, and GLC, the GLA becomes the latest vehicle to showcase the company’s revised EV approach. Mercedes is aiming to improve competitiveness in key global markets while delivering longer range, faster charging, and more advanced technology than previous generations of its electric vehicles.

The fully electric GLA will be available in two configurations. The GLA 250+ Electric features a single-motor setup producing 268 horsepower, while the GLA 350 4MATIC Electric adds a second motor for all-wheel drive and a combined output of 349 horsepower. Mercedes says the dual-motor version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
Both electric variants utilize an 85-kWh usable nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack. Mercedes estimates up to 408 miles of range under the WLTP testing cycle, suggesting that U.S. EPA ratings could still exceed 350 miles. An 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 320 kW, allowing the vehicle to add approximately 168 miles of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions. A built-in DC converter also enables charging at conventional 400-volt stations.

Customers seeking a traditional powertrain can choose a hybrid version powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 48-volt system uses a 1.3-kWh battery and allows limited electric-only operation during low-speed driving and highway coasting while also capturing energy through regenerative braking.
Technology is a major focus of the new GLA. A Terrain mode includes a “Transparent Hood” feature that uses exterior cameras to create a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle. The crossover also debuts the latest MBUX Virtual Assistant, powered by ChatGPT and Google Cloud Automotive AI technology, enabling more natural conversations and advanced navigation assistance.
Driver assistance systems include eight cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors working together to support Mercedes’ Distance Assist Distronic technology. Available MB.Drive Assist Plus adds enhanced traffic and stoplight recognition functions in supported markets.

Styling closely follows the design language introduced on Mercedes’ latest electric models, featuring a streamlined profile, illuminated lighting elements, and a modern digital interior dominated by large display screens. Premium materials, ambient lighting, and a clean dashboard layout help position the GLA as a compelling luxury alternative in the rapidly growing compact EV crossover segment.
If Mercedes can deliver competitive pricing and strong EPA-rated range figures, the 2028 GLA could become one of the most significant entries in its class, challenging offerings from Tesla, BMW, Cadillac, and other premium electric vehicle manufacturers.
