Aptera Partners With Chinese Firm to Fast-Track its Solar-Powered Electric Vehicle Production

Aptera, the California startup developing its highly aerodynamic solar-powered three-wheel EV, has partnered with China’s Launch Design to accelerate production and reduce costs. Established in 2000, Launch Design is a design-for-manufacturing company with more than 3,000 employees and experience working on more than 400 vehicles for automakers including Tesla, Cadillac, Renault, BYD and Chevrolet.

The partnership is valued at approximately $44 million (RMB 300 million) and will give Aptera access to Launch Design’s overseas pilot production facility, where the first solar EVs will be assembled. Launch Design will also help develop the assembly fixtures, tooling and manufacturing processes that will eventually be shipped to Aptera’s facility in Carlsbad, California.

That means the initial production batch is expected to be assembled in China before the manufacturing process moves to California. Aptera has previously said it ordered the first 40 production bodies and chassis for its initial customer vehicles, which are expected to begin rolling off the assembly line in the fourth quarter.

Under the agreement, Aptera will fund two-thirds of approved program costs, while Launch Design will cover the remaining third, worth up to $15 million, through warrants to purchase Aptera stock. The investment will support tooling, assembly fixtures, vehicle testing, pilot production and preparation for higher-volume manufacturing.

Aptera says it has worked with Launch Design for more than a year and has already seen projected bill-of-materials costs decline. Launch Design’s global supply chain will also allow Aptera to source lower-cost components and receive completed subassemblies instead of individual loose parts, simplifying final assembly.

The partnership could be an important step toward making Aptera a sustainable mass-production business rather than another EV startup that produces only a small number of vehicles.
