Chargepoint Deploys Overhead EV Charging System With Retractable Cables at PDX

On August 19, 2026, ChargePoint announced a rapid EV charging deployment at Portland International Airport (PDX) designed to change how airports electrify rental car fleets. The installation uses an overhead charging system with retractable cable management, addressing several challenges associated with conventional ground-mounted charging equipment, including space requirements, installation costs, and the risk of vehicle damage.

Located at PDX’s Quick Turnaround (QTA) Facility, the deployment includes 10 dual-port fast-charging dispensers mounted overhead. The system can connect up to 20 vehicles simultaneously, allowing rental cars to recharge between customers and helping rental companies improve fleet utilization.

By moving the charging equipment above the vehicles, the system frees up valuable ground-level space while reducing the potential for vehicles to strike and damage charging equipment. The design could be particularly useful at airports, where rental fleets operate in confined areas and vehicles must be turned around quickly.

The deployment also uses ChargePoint’s fleet management software, giving operators real-time visibility and control over charging operations. Rental fleet managers can remotely monitor equipment, troubleshoot issues, and manage charging based on operational needs.

The combination of high-power charging, overhead infrastructure, retractable cables, and fleet software creates a charging system designed specifically for the demands of airport rental operations. Rather than requiring airports to dedicate additional ground space to large numbers of charging stations, the approach uses existing vehicle areas more efficiently.
