Maryland to Expand Reliable EV Charging With Five New Fast-Charging Projects

On August 18, 2026, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced conditional awards for five new public electric vehicle fast-charging projects through the latest round of Maryland’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program. The projects continue Maryland’s use of federal funding to expand convenient, reliable and accessible EV charging along heavily traveled transportation corridors.

Launched in March 2026, Round 3 supports projects in Prince George’s, Frederick, Montgomery, Charles and Baltimore counties. Conditional awardees include Tesla, ElectraStop and Universal EV.

“These awards represent a major step forward to filling remaining EV charging gaps along Maryland’s major travel corridors and making drivers feel at ease knowing there is a reliable charger in range,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson.

The awards represent approximately $3.7 million in federal funding, backed by about $918,000 in private-sector matching funds. Under the NEVI Program, conditional awardees can request federal funding for up to 80% of eligible project costs and must provide at least a 20% match.

Once completed, the Round 3 projects will add 24 public fast-charging ports at gas stations and convenience stores, a hotel and a commercial plaza. Awardees will have two years to complete design and construction, with the charging stations expected to open to the public by late 2028.

“When drivers know they can find reliable fast charging along Maryland’s highways, they can travel with greater confidence,” said State Highway Administrator Will Pines. “By expanding charging access along our main travel corridors, we are strengthening the transportation network, supporting cleaner travel choices, and helping ensure Maryland is ready for the future of mobility.”

Since Maryland launched its NEVI Program in 2024, 70 EV fast-charging ports are available to the public, with another 104 ports from Rounds 1 and 2 in development. Round 3 brings Maryland’s total NEVI investment to $19.7 million.

As of July 31, 2026, Maryland recorded 158,734 registered electric vehicles. Future NEVI rounds are expected to expand charging along travel corridors and in communities where drivers live, work, shop and spend time.
