New Genesis GV90 NeoLun EV for the U.S. Offers Unique Large Opening, Coach Doors and Front Swivel Seats

Genesis’ new GV90 NeoLun electric SUV is loaded with innovation, but not in the dash or drivetrain as might be expected. Instead, Hyundai’s luxury brand has developed a clever new approach to the doors. The GV90 NeoLun, which means “New Moon,” also features high-tech luxury and a fresh design built around simple elegance.

The GV90 NeoLun’s most noticeable feature is its new coach doors, which create a remarkably large opening for the driver and passenger, going without the traditional B-pillar. Putting the front-door hinges on the opposite side might seem like an easy solution, but that would create major safety concerns during a side crash and could make entering and exiting the vehicle awkward because one door would have to be opened or closed before the other.

Genesis addresses both problems with a dual-motion hinge. The system first slides the rear door slightly outward and then rotates it open. This allows the rear doors to open and close independently without interfering with the front doors. For safety, the GV90 uses a new structure that connects the doors to the vehicle body while incorporating two high-strength steel beams. The entire passenger cabin is protected by a frame that is 50% thicker than conventional vehicles and reinforced with steel tubes, effectively creating a concealed roll cage.

The NeoLun’s design features soft curves and a rounded rear end that gives the SUV some Rolls-Royce or Land Rover vibes without directly copying either brand. The effect is somewhat interrupted by the oversized front grille and the inverted-pyramid light strip at the front. Overall, however, the design, particularly the coach doors, is highly original and has a strong luxury appeal.

An All-New EV Platform With a Huge Battery

The GV90 uses an all-new eMP platform designed to provide abundant cabin space, a refined ride and respectable driving dynamics for such a large luxury SUV. Both the GV90 NeoLun and the standard GV90, which does not have the coach doors, use a 123.5 kWh battery pack. It is the largest battery ever installed in a Hyundai Motor Group vehicle.

The battery provides an estimated 311 miles of range on a single charge, which is not particularly impressive considering its enormous capacity. However, charging performance is much stronger. When connected to a 350 kW fast charger, the battery can go from 10% to 80% in an impressive 22 minutes.

The dual-motor drive system produces 657 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That sounds impressive, although it may be only adequate for a vehicle of this size. Genesis has not yet released acceleration figures.

An adjustable multi-chamber air suspension system is designed to provide a smooth ride, with adjustable height depending on road conditions. Active rear-wheel steering of up to five degrees should also help reduce the turning circle of the 208.1-inch-long SUV.

Genesis has not released the GV90’s weight, but the combination of its huge battery, reinforced body and air suspension system could make the GV90 NeoLun one of the heaviest SUVs ever produced.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the GV90 models combine extensive technology with luxury materials and features. The center Cinematic Display measures 23.6 inches in driving mode and expands to 24.6 inches in extended mode when the vehicle is parked, effectively turning the SUV into a drive-in theater on wheels.

Instead of a traditional gauge cluster, drivers receive a 25-inch head-up display showing information such as speed, navigation and driver-assistance functions.

The 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D sound system includes a virtual venue feature that can recreate the acoustics of famous concert venues, including Wembley Stadium and Boston Symphony Hall.

The cabin also features ambient lighting, massage seats and wood veneer flooring with radiant heating, a feature that is unusual even among luxury vehicles. Above the passengers, Genesis’ Smart Vision Roof can adjust its opacity across six separate zones.

The front seats can swivel around so occupants can face their passengers and talk, discuss stocks or even play contract bridge. Interior materials include natural wood, cashmere, leather and stone, with five available interior color combinations: Veiled Indigo with Puglia Green, Folio Brown with Batiste Blue, Vault Black with Shadow Gray, Tyrian Purple with Travertine Beige, and Saddle Brown with Shadow Gray.

The GV90 models are scheduled to go on sale in early 2027. Genesis has not announced pricing, although the vehicles are expected to start around $100,000. With its creative coach doors, original design, huge battery, advanced technology and highly luxurious interior, the GV90 NeoLun is aimed at high-end SUV buyers looking for something genuinely different.
