Telo Claims Its Small EV Truck Can Tow More Than A Base Ford F-150

California startup Telo Motors is aiming to redefine what a compact electric pickup can do. The company recently announced that its upcoming MT1 electric truck will have a towing capacity of up to 8,000 pounds, an increase from the previously planned 6,600-pound rating.

The news was shared by Telo co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Forrest North in a recent YouTube video. The upgraded towing capability puts the small pickup in competition with much larger trucks, despite its unusually compact size.

The Telo MT1 measures just 152 inches in length, about the same size as a modern Mini Cooper two-door hatchback. Even with its small footprint, the truck features four doors, seating for up to five passengers, and a 60-inch cargo bed. The combination of compact dimensions and impressive towing capability could make it an attractive option for drivers who need truck utility in urban environments.

North explained that the new 8,000-pound towing rating opens the door to towing a growing number of advanced electric trailers equipped with their own batteries and regenerative braking systems. During the demonstration, the MT1 was shown towing a Pebble Flow electric camper, which features a 45-kWh battery pack, dual hub motors, and a gross weight of approximately 6,800 pounds.

According to Telo, the truck’s regenerative braking system helps manage heavy loads more effectively while improving control and efficiency. The MT1’s estimated 4,400-pound curb weight also contributes to towing stability.

The vehicle is built on a dedicated electric platform that places the axles close to the front and rear of the truck. This design maximizes cabin space while also improving towing performance. Because the hitch is positioned closer to the rear axle, the truck experiences less leverage force from the trailer, reducing the impact on handling and weight distribution.

The MT1’s towing capability compares favorably with several well-known pickups. Certain Ford F-150 configurations equipped with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 are rated to tow between 7,400 and 7,600 pounds.

Telo currently estimates a starting price of $41,520 for the entry-level rear-wheel-drive model, which is expected to offer approximately 260 miles of driving range. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with an estimated 350 miles of range is also planned, with pricing expected to start around $50,000.

While the specifications are impressive, the MT1 is still awaiting production. Telo recently signed a manufacturing agreement with Schwab Industries, a Tier 1 automotive supplier that will produce the truck’s body structures. The company says production is scheduled to begin by the end of the year, bringing it one step closer to delivering its vision of a compact electric truck with full-size capabilities.

Towing capability has been one of the biggest challenges facing electric pickup trucks. Pulling heavy trailers can significantly reduce driving range, making towing a key concern for truck buyers. While manufacturers continue to improve battery technology, vehicle efficiency, and towing performance, range loss while towing remains a common issue across the EV truck market.

However, despite the attention towing receives in marketing and consumer discussions, most American truck owners rarely tow on a regular basis. Studies have consistently shown that a large percentage of pickup owners use their trucks primarily for commuting, family transportation, and everyday errands, with only a small minority frequently towing heavy loads. Even so, strong towing ratings remain an important selling point, as many buyers want the capability available when they need it.
