Why Word of Mouth and EV Ride-and-Drives Sell More Electric Vehicles
For decades, the automotive industry has relied on advertising campaigns, dealership promotions, and marketing incentives to sell vehicles. Yet when it comes to electric vehicles, one of the most effective sales tools isn’t a commercial or a brochure. It’s a conversation with a satisfied EV owner.
Studies have shown that personal recommendations and firsthand experiences play a major role in EV adoption. Many people remain “EV-curious” but have questions about range, charging, battery life, reliability, and costs. While online research can provide answers, nothing compares to hearing directly from someone who drives an electric vehicle every day.
This is why EV ride-and-drive events are so powerful. When prospective buyers sit behind the wheel of an EV, they quickly discover that electric vehicles are quiet, responsive, and enjoyable to drive. Experiencing instant torque, smooth acceleration, and advanced technology firsthand often changes perceptions in a matter of minutes.
EVinfo.net recently reported on an example of a local EV ride-and-drive event.
The New Jersey chapter of the Electric Vehicle Association (EVA) joined the New Jersey Sierra Club for the Montclair Fourth of July Parade, helping showcase the growing role of electric vehicles in creating a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future. Led by William Beren, an EVA member and Transportation Chair at the NJ Chapter of the Sierra Club, the group brought together a diverse lineup of electric vehicles that attracted attention throughout the event.

Equally important are the conversations that take place before and after the test drive. EV owners can share real-world experiences about charging at home, taking road trips, and maintaining their vehicles. They can explain how much they save on fuel and maintenance compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Many owners are eager to discuss how switching to an EV has reduced their transportation costs while also lowering their environmental impact.
These peer-to-peer discussions are especially valuable because they help combat misinformation. Despite growing EV adoption, myths persist about battery longevity, winter performance, charging availability, and grid impacts. Experienced EV drivers can answer questions honestly and provide practical examples from their daily lives. Their firsthand knowledge often carries more credibility than advertising or corporate messaging.

Fortunately, there are organizations around the world dedicated to connecting EV-curious consumers with experienced owners. In the United States, the Electric Vehicle Association is one of the best resources for learning about electric vehicles. Through local chapters, educational events, and ride-and-drive programs, the organization helps consumers speak directly with knowledgeable EV owners in their communities.
Similar organizations exist globally. In the United Kingdom, the Electric Vehicle Association England supports EV education and outreach. Australia is served by the Australian Electric Vehicle Association, while Canada benefits from groups including the EV Society, the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association, and the Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa.
EV owners are proud to discuss their vehicles with others, because in study after study, EV owners report overwhelming satisfaction.
CDK’s 2026 EV Ownership Study reveals that current battery electric vehicle (BEV) owners remain overwhelmingly satisfied with their decision to go electric and show stronger loyalty to the technology than ever before. An impressive 90% of owners said they plan to purchase another EV, up from 82% in 2025. Only 1% said they plan to return exclusively to gasoline-powered transportation.
As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow fast, the most persuasive voice may remain the neighbor, coworker, friend, or community member who already owns one. Real-world experience builds trust, answers questions, and helps people separate fact from fiction. In many cases, a short conversation and a quick test drive can accomplish more than months of advertising. That’s why word of mouth and EV ride-and-drive events continue to be among the most effective tools for accelerating the transition to clean, cost-saving electric transportation.
