Generational Digital Logbook Brings Battery Health Data to UK Used EV Listings

Generational launched a new digital Logbook designed to give UK used EV buyers clearer, vehicle-specific information before they contact a retailer or visit a showroom. The tool places battery State of Health, real-world range, charging information and running-cost data directly within online used EV listings, with East Midlands retailer Available Car becoming its first customer.

The Logbook is designed to address a key challenge facing the used EV market: consumers often want more information about battery life, range, charging and ownership costs before deciding whether to purchase an electric vehicle. Generational said the digital tool gives retailers a way to answer those questions while customers are actively comparing vehicles online.

Retailers can integrate the Logbook directly into their own vehicle listing pages. The platform combines three main features: a Battery Health Report, an interactive EV Range Map and a Running Cost Calculator. Together, the tools provide information specific to the individual vehicle rather than relying only on its age, mileage or headline driving range.

At the center of the Logbook is Generational’s Battery Health Report. Buyers can view a Battery Health Certificate for the vehicle, its State of Health as a percentage of original capacity, the original battery capacity and details about the remaining battery warranty. Generational said this information gives buyers greater visibility into the condition of an EV’s most valuable component.

The interactive EV Range Map is designed to make range information more practical. Using the vehicle’s effective range, customers can see how far they could travel on a full charge, adjust the results by season and choose between one-way or round-trip journeys. The map also displays charging locations relative to a selected starting point. Rather than leaving buyers to interpret a quoted range figure on its own, the tool helps them understand how a specific EV could fit their regular travel needs.

Generational also included a Running Cost Calculator that compares the estimated cost of operating an EV with a gasoline-powered vehicle. Users can adjust annual mileage, the percentage of charging completed at home and in public, home and public charging prices, gasoline prices and MPG. The calculator then provides indicative annual savings and cost-per-mile estimates.

A separate charging calculator estimates the amount of time a driver could spend charging each week. Buyers can adjust annual mileage and the balance between home and public charging, helping people who are unfamiliar with EV ownership better understand what charging could involve.

The company said the launch responds to persistent uncertainty surrounding used EVs. Generational cited Cox Automotive’s 2026 UK EV Adoption and Perceptions Report, based on responses from more than 2,000 UK drivers, which identified cost perceptions, battery concerns and charging confidence as major barriers to EV adoption. The research found that clearer information about battery health, degradation and warranties could help address those concerns. It also found that 65% of UK drivers believe the total cost of EV ownership is higher than that of an internal-combustion vehicle, despite lower maintenance costs reported by many EV owners.

Generational’s own 2025 Battery Performance Index, based on more than 8,000 battery health assessments across the UK used EV market, found an average State of Health of 95.15%. The company said many older and higher-mileage EVs continued to perform strongly, although the variation in battery condition increased as vehicles aged. That finding reinforces the importance of evaluating individual vehicles rather than making assumptions based on age, mileage or fleet-wide averages.

The Logbook follows Generational’s partnership with Maverick Diagnostics earlier this year, which expanded access to its battery testing through UK workshops. The company said the new platform builds on its existing battery health checks and State of Health certification, which are already used by retailers, leasing companies and remarketers for used EV appraisal, valuation and resale.

Oliver Phillpott, CEO of Generational, said used EV buyers need clearer answers before they are ready to move from interest to purchase. He said displaying battery health, warranty information, usable range, charging context and running costs directly on a vehicle listing can make EV ownership easier to understand and help remove confidence barriers before customers arrive at a showroom.

Steve Wiseman, Operations Manager at Available Car, said used EVs remain unfamiliar territory for many customers and that the Logbook provides useful information while buyers are already researching their options. He said showing the expected running costs, driving range and battery condition of a particular vehicle could help customers feel more comfortable and better informed when choosing a used EV.

For retailers, Generational positions the Logbook as a tool to improve EV merchandising, support conversion and provide more useful information to prospective buyers at the earliest stage of the purchase process. As used EV sales continue to grow, making battery condition and other ownership information transparent could play an increasingly important role in helping buyers evaluate vehicles and confidently make the switch to electric driving.
