UK Battery-Electric Car Sales Jump 30% in August, Leading New-Car Market
Battery-electric vehicle registrations in the UK jumped about 30% year over year in August 2026, making EVs the country’s largest new-car fuel type for the month, according to data from New AutoMotive. Reuters reported the news on September 3, 2026.
Overall new-car registrations increased 17.5% to 93,977 vehicles. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for nearly 30% of the market, with 27,876 registrations. Hybrid vehicles represented about 29% of sales, while gasoline-powered vehicles accounted for approximately 21.5%.
EV adoption across Europe continues to benefit from higher fuel costs, which have been driven in part by global oil-market disruptions associated with the Iran war. New AutoMotive CEO Ben Nelmes said automakers are continuing to deliver electric cars and vans as consumers increasingly seek them out.
The strong August results come as the UK government reviews its zero-emission vehicle strategy. Introduced in 2024, the ZEV mandate requires automakers to increase the percentage of zero-emission vehicles in their annual sales. The target calls for EVs to represent 33% of new-car sales in 2026, increasing to 80% in 2030 and 100% by 2035.

Industry advocates and EVinfo.net have urged the government not to weaken the targets as EV sales accelerate. James Court, public policy director at Octopus Electric Vehicles, said manufacturers, drivers and investors need certainty to maintain the UK’s momentum toward electric transportation.
Tesla remained the leading battery-electric vehicle brand in the UK, holding an 8.8% year-to-date market share, although that was down from roughly 10% a year earlier. Kia ranked second with a 6.7% share, followed closely by China’s BYD at 6.4%. BYD’s share has continued to expand as the automaker increases its presence in the UK.
Kia also led monthly battery-electric registrations for the second consecutive month, according to New AutoMotive data.
EVinfo.net’s Take: The UK Should Stay the Course on ZEV Targets, Fuel Prices Will Stay High
The UK should resist calls to weaken or change its Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) targets. Recent electric vehicle sales demonstrate that consumers are increasingly choosing EVs, with battery-electric vehicles accounting for nearly 30% of new-car registrations in August 2026.
The argument for maintaining the targets becomes even stronger as fuel prices remain elevated. The ongoing Iran war shows no sign of ending anytime soon, creating continued uncertainty in global oil markets and putting pressure on gasoline and diesel prices.
For drivers, that makes the economic case for electric vehicles stronger. EVs provide an opportunity to reduce exposure to volatile fuel prices while offering lower fueling and operating costs.
The UK should view the current momentum as an opportunity rather than a reason to slow down. Automakers are bringing more electric models to market, consumers are buying them, and rising fuel costs make the transition increasingly attractive.
