BMW M Celebrates One Million Vehicles As Munich Plant Prepares For Fully Electric Future

BMW Munich (BMW M) is celebrating the production of its one-millionth BMW M vehicle, marking a major milestone for the performance brand more than five decades after its creation. The milestone vehicle is a BMW M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III special paintwork. Produced at BMW Group Plant Munich, it was formally presented by Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich, to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, during an official ceremony. BMW announced the news on October 2, 2026.

The milestone represents more than 50 years of BMW M history defined by performance, innovation and driving excitement. It also points directly toward the brand’s electric future. BMW Group Plant Munich will produce the fully electric BMW M3, the first high-performance model to feature BMW M Neue Klasse technology. It will be the second Neue Klasse model produced at Munich following the fully electric BMW i3.

“BMW M combines road and racetrack capabilities with everyday practicality,” said Franciscus van Meel. He said the one-millionth BMW M vehicle demonstrates that these qualities continue to be valued by customers 40 years after the introduction of the first BMW M3. BMW M plans to continue developing its high-performance portfolio around Neue Klasse technology, including fully electric models.

The Future Of BMW Group Plant Munich Is Electric

Production of the one-millionth BMW M vehicle reinforces Plant Munich’s role in the future of BMW M. The facility has a history of more than 100 years and began producing the current BMW M3 generation in 2020. The future fully electric BMW M3 will be manufactured exclusively at Munich, further strengthening the plant’s strategic importance within BMW’s global production network.

Peter Weber said the BMW M3 has a close connection to Munich and that employees are proud to produce the first fully electric M3 at the site. The transition allows the plant to combine its long history of producing sporty BMW models with the company’s move toward electromobility.

From 2027, BMW Group Plant Munich will produce only fully electric vehicles. BMW has remodeled the plant while maintaining ongoing production, adding modern manufacturing structures, digitalization and new production capabilities to support future electric models.

BMW has invested approximately €650 million in transforming the Munich facility into an exclusively electric vehicle production site. A new body shop, advanced vehicle assembly operation and logistics areas were constructed across about one-third of the plant’s total area.

The transition of BMW M’s flagship performance model to electric power illustrates how electrification is extending into high-performance vehicles. The upcoming electric BMW M3 will combine the performance heritage of BMW M with the company’s Neue Klasse technology while being produced at a Munich facility that is itself becoming fully electric.

The BMW Group operates more than 30 production sites worldwide and has a sales network covering more than 140 countries. In 2025, the company sold 2.46 million passenger vehicles and more than 202,500 motorcycles worldwide.
