Ford Opens U.S. Preorder Invite List For $30,000 Fathom Electric Pickup
Ford opened sign-ups for preorder invitations for its upcoming Fathom electric pickup, which will start at $28,350 before a $1,595 destination fee. Official preorders are expected to begin in early 2027, with customer deliveries planned for later that year.
The Fathom will be Ford’s first vehicle built on its new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. Its starting price will be below $30,000, making it substantially less expensive than the company’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup.
Ford has not yet released final specifications for driving range, towing capacity or other key performance figures. However, the automaker says the four-door electric pickup will provide more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, in addition to a front trunk and rear truck bed.
The cabin will feature a large touchscreen with Apple Maps integrated into the navigation system. Standard equipment will include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a digital key and remote vehicle controls through the Ford app.
All Fathom models are expected to support Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology and bidirectional charging, which can allow electricity to flow from the vehicle to compatible external systems.
To reduce costs and vehicle weight, Ford will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which do not contain cobalt or nickel. The battery pack will form part of the vehicle floor, lowering the center of gravity to improve handling while creating more interior space.
Ford is targeting acceleration from zero to 60 mph comparable to a Mustang EcoBoost. Prototypes spotted testing appear similar in size to the compact Ford Maverick, although final vehicle dimensions have not been announced.
The Fathom will also feature a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, providing access to Tesla Supercharger infrastructure.
Production is planned for Ford’s 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with initial production preparations scheduled for 2027. CEO Jim Farley has acknowledged the challenge of launching the vehicle at scale while meeting cost and timing targets.
Ford says its 2027 launch schedule remains unchanged. The Fathom represents a major effort to make electric pickups more affordable for American buyers, potentially expanding EV adoption through a lower purchase price and reduced operating costs.

Ford is reportedly targeting 100,000 sales of its upcoming Fathom electric pickup during its first year on the market, according to The Wall Street Journal. If achieved, the goal would make the Fathom one of America’s best-selling EVs and potentially the best-selling electric vehicle from a non-Tesla automaker.
The company hopes to avoid the pricing challenges that affected its F-150 Lightning, which was ultimately canceled after sales fell short of expectations.
The Fathom’s success will depend on whether Ford can maintain its sub-$30,000 starting price while delivering competitive range, charging performance and practicality. If it does, the truck could make electric pickups accessible to significantly more American buyers.
