Opel’s New Concept Previews The All-Electric Wagon Of Tomorrow

Opel revealed the STX Concept, a futuristic electric station wagon that previews the German automaker’s vision for the next generation of wagons. The concept will take center stage at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, October 12 to 18, 2026, showcasing an aerodynamic design, advanced lighting, active aerodynamic technology, and an all-electric powertrain with all-wheel drive.

Station wagons have been an important part of Opel’s identity for decades. The company introduced the Olympia Rekord Caravan in 1953, followed by the Kadett Caravan and numerous other wagon models throughout its history. The STX Concept builds on that heritage while presenting a new interpretation of the body style for the electric era.

Officially called the Opel Sports Tourer eXperimental Concept, the STX name connects the vehicle to Opel’s Sports Tourer models, including the latest Astra Sports Tourer. However, the concept is not intended as a direct preview of a particular production vehicle. Instead, Opel describes it as a broader look at future models and the next evolution of the company’s design philosophy.

Opel calls the STX Concept its vision of the electric wagon of tomorrow. CEO Florian Huettl said the concept demonstrates how exciting and emotional future wagons can be while delivering maximum functionality and efficiency. He also noted that the vehicle incorporates characteristic features that will appear in future Opel models, reinforcing the company’s position as a pioneer of the station wagon in Europe.

The STX Concept introduces an evolved version of Opel’s Vizor front end. Unlike the ultra-slim front ends used by many modern electric vehicles, the concept features a taller, more prominent Vizor design that complements the wagon’s proportions. Vertically angled lighting slats form the outer edges of the front fascia before tapering toward the center. An illuminated Opel lightning bolt remains the focal point, while the brand’s signature crease running down the center of the hood emphasizes the sharp, sporty appearance.

The rear continues the design theme, with a steeply sloping roofline intended to combine contemporary styling with practical cargo capacity. Opel says the shape is designed to provide maximum everyday usability through additional cargo space. Slim, illuminated compass-axis elements and an illuminated Opel wordmark occupy the center of the tailgate.

The prominent C-pillars are another distinctive feature. Glass light strips extend rearward from the window line and continue into the roof, creating a recognizable lighting signature. Illuminated STX lettering runs along the sides, while cameras replace conventional side mirrors.

Finished in silver-blue, the STX Concept has a low, aerodynamic silhouette designed to support long-distance efficiency and high-speed stability. Tightly fitted bodywork, short overhangs, and wide, flared wheel arches give the wagon a planted stance. The concept rides on specially designed alloy wheels fitted with Goodyear tires measuring 285/35 R22.

Aerodynamics play a central role in the vehicle’s design, with Opel seeking improvements in efficiency, driving range, straight-line stability, and driving dynamics. An active aerodynamic system continuously adjusts to changing driving conditions. Movable elements at the rear help manage airflow, reduce drag, and improve stability.

At higher speeds, blue-colored diffusers extend from underneath the rear of the vehicle. Vertical elements positioned behind the wheels also extend outward from the bumper to further smooth airflow. These moving components distinguish the concept’s aerodynamic system from a purely fixed-body design.

Underneath the exterior, Opel describes the STX Concept as featuring an innovative electric architecture with all-wheel drive. The automaker has not disclosed detailed powertrain specifications, battery capacity, charging performance, or estimated driving range. However, Opel says the concept has a top speed exceeding 124 mph.

The interior develops Opel’s “Painting with Light” design theme, an approach first introduced on the 2023 Opel Experimental concept and subsequently featured on the 2025 Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo. The STX Concept advances the theme with immersive lighting elements and lightweight seats, extending the vehicle’s futuristic design approach into the cabin.

The STX Concept is more than a styling exercise, as Opel says it already incorporates design features that will appear in future production models. Nevertheless, the company has not announced a production schedule or confirmed that the concept will become a specific showroom model. A production vehicle incorporating its styling and technology is not expected before 2028.
