World Premiere of the smart #2 EV Reinvents the Urban Two-Seater
smart unveiled the all-electric smart #2 at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, 2026, introducing a contemporary reinvention of its iconic two-seater. Thirty years after the original smart two-seater concept was presented in Paris, the new smart #2 brings the ultra-compact urban car into a new era with dedicated electric vehicle technology, rear-wheel drive, advanced suspension engineering and an updated safety structure.
The smart #2 combines the brand’s distinctive compact proportions with technology developed specifically for modern urban mobility. Its world premiere marks the return of a vehicle concept designed to make city driving and parking easier while providing contemporary comfort, connectivity and safety.

The Ultimate City Car Returns
Measuring 2,746 mm (108.1 inches) in length, the smart #2 retains the wheels-at-the-corners design that has characterized the model since its first generation. This configuration maximizes interior space while maintaining an ultra-compact exterior footprint. Its 6.95-meter (22.8-foot) curb-to-curb turning circle is designed to make navigating narrow streets, negotiating tight corners and parking in confined urban spaces easier.
The exterior and interior carry forward recognizable smart fortwo design elements in updated forms. These include two-tone body colors, the iconic Split Tailgate and a practical cabin designed around everyday mobility needs. The new model combines these familiar characteristics with contemporary styling and a newly engineered electric platform.
Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe GmbH, said the smart #2 represents more than another addition to the company’s vehicle portfolio. He described it as the return of an automotive icon, reimagined for today’s cities while preserving the qualities that made the original smart fortwo distinctive. Ufer noted that technology has advanced, cities have changed and the demand for clever urban mobility remains relevant, making this an appropriate time for the next generation of the two-seater.

Purpose-Built Electric Technology
At the heart of the smart #2 is the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), engineered specifically for the new two-seater rather than adapted from a larger vehicle platform.
The powertrain features a rear-mounted 60 kW electric motor delivering 130 Nm of torque to the rear wheels. Wider tires at the rear than at the front are intended to improve stability and driving dynamics. The floor-mounted battery contributes to a low center of gravity, supporting vehicle control and handling.
The battery is a 35.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit, with a targeted combined driving range of up to 290 km (approximately 180 miles) under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). The range figure remains a target value.
DC fast charging supports power levels of up to 65 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% state of charge in approximately 20 minutes. For everyday charging, the smart #2 supports AC charging at up to 11 kW. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability also enables the car to supply electricity to compatible external devices, extending the usefulness of its battery beyond driving.
The new five-link rear suspension, described by smart as a first in its class, is designed to provide confident, composed handling in urban environments and on highways. Combined with the low center of gravity created by the floor-mounted battery, the suspension architecture supports direct steering geometry, responsive handling and improved ride comfort.
Dr. Tilo Schweers, Vice President of Research and Development Europe at smart Europe GmbH, explained that engineering a balanced driving experience in such a compact vehicle required detailed work on chassis hard points, steering ratio and tire compounds. The company tested the smart #2 at proving grounds, in wind tunnels and on public roads across different climates to evaluate its performance under real-world conditions.

Safety and Comfort in a Compact Format
The smart #2’s body structure centers on the Tridion Cell Evo, the next generation of the safety cell that has defined smart vehicles since the brand’s earliest model. The structure is designed to provide a robust protective framework around the passenger compartment without compromising the vehicle’s compact dimensions.
Beyond its structural design, the smart #2 includes driver assistance technologies as standard equipment. These include smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, and Highway Assist. The vehicle also offers Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
The combination of its safety cell and driver assistance systems is intended to bring contemporary safety technology to the ultra-compact two-seater segment.

Trim Levels and Equipment for European Buyers
In European markets, the smart #2 will be offered in three core trim levels, Pure, Pure+ and Premium, alongside a limited Couture Edition. Across the range, the cabin features a continuous bench-style seating arrangement, an S-shaped cockpit, intuitive operating modes and an open, clearly organized interior.
A 10.1-inch central touchscreen is paired with an 8.8-inch driver display. Connectivity features include 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, supported by an eight-year Connectivity Package that keeps the vehicle connected to smart’s digital services. Another distinctive feature is the smart Pillar, an attachment point integrated into the dashboard for mounting small accessories within easy reach.
smart #2 Pure
The Pure serves as the entry point to the range, combining essential equipment with features intended for everyday urban driving. Its equipment includes vehicle-to-load functionality, smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Highway Assist.
LED headlights and taillights with automatic high-beam functionality complete the lighting package, providing equipment for both city streets and highway journeys.
smart #2 Pure+
The Pure+ builds on the Pure specification with AC charging at up to 11 kW and a heated driver’s seat. It also includes the comprehensive driver assistance package, with Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Alert provided as standard.
smart #2 Premium
The Premium adds a glass roof, heated artificial leather seats for both the driver and passenger, and a dedicated seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
Buyers can select from additional exterior color combinations, including two-tone finishes, with coordinated interior options offering further opportunities to personalize the vehicle.
smart #2 Couture Edition
The smart #2 Couture Edition will be limited to 999 vehicles in Europe. Its distinctive exterior combines Atelier White Matte paint with a Platinum Gold roof and 16-inch Lyra wheels featuring gold details.
The limited edition includes the full Premium specification, adding a glass roof, ambient lighting, heated seats and a heated steering wheel, Sennheiser audio, wireless charging and navigation. A numbered interior badge further distinguishes the Couture Edition from the standard models.
