Toyota Updates the 2027 RAV4 PHEV With High-Speed Charging, A Rare Capability For Hybrids
Most plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) do not support DC fast charging because their battery packs are significantly smaller than those of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). However, several PHEV models offer DC rapid-charging capabilities, providing drivers with faster charging options.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV supports CHAdeMO DC fast charging, with charging rates typically ranging from 22 to 38 kW, depending on the model year. It can generally reach 80% battery capacity in approximately 30 to 38 minutes.
Certain Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrids also offer DC fast charging, including selected C-Class PHEV, GLC Coupé PHEV, GLE Coupé PHEV and A 250e models. Charging capabilities vary by model and battery configuration, with rates ranging from approximately 24 kW to more than 30 kW.
Some Audi e-hybrid models sold in European and international markets also support rapid charging. Examples include the Audi A3 Sportback 40 TFSI e and Audi Q3 e-hybrid. Various PHEV models offered by Chinese brands also offer the capability.
Although DC fast charging remains uncommon among PHEVs, these models demonstrate high speed charging capability is growing, and may become common on all PHEVs.

2027 Toyota RAV4 PHEV Adds NACS Charging and DC Fast-Charging Capability
Toyota is introducing several upgrades to its 2027 RAV4 lineup, including a major charging improvement for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models: a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) port with DC fast-charging capability.
The RAV4, one of America’s best-selling vehicles, will be offered with hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with front- or all-wheel drive depending on the model.
All 2027 RAV4 PHEV models feature a driver-side NACS charging port, allowing owners to access NACS chargers without an adapter. They also include an 11 kW onboard AC charger.

The plug-in hybrid uses Toyota’s sixth-generation PHEV system, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a high-capacity battery. Standard all-wheel drive produces a combined 321 horsepower. The SE offers up to 52 miles of all-electric range.
Four PHEV trims will be available: SE, XSE, Woodland and GR Sport. The Woodland features revised suspension, all-terrain tires, roof rails and 9.1 inches of ground clearance. The GR Sport adds performance-oriented suspension and steering, sport seats and distinctive styling.

Inside, standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.5-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A larger 12.9-inch touchscreen and nine-speaker JBL premium audio system are available on select trims.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard across the 2027 RAV4 lineup, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure assistance and pedestrian detection.
Starting prices for the 2027 RAV4 PHEV are $42,100 for the SE, $47,800 for the XSE, $46,055 for the Woodland and $49,100 for the GR Sport, excluding the $1,595 destination fee.
The 2027 RAV4 HEV starts at $32,300. Hybrid models are expected at dealerships later in 2026, with PHEV deliveries following in early 2027.
Adding NACS and DC fast charging is a significant development for Toyota and other plug-in hybrids, giving RAV4 owners access to an extensive charging network while retaining gasoline-powered flexibility.
