Driving electric vehicle adoption

Florida Gets Three New EV Incentives as Important Elections Approach

As the state with the second-most electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, Florida is quickly emerging as a leader in the U.S. electrification movement. The Sunshine State’s commitment to EV adoption is evident in its comprehensive statewide programs designed to improve the EV charging infrastructure, provide lower-than-average electricity rates, and introduce incentives like an HOV decal for EVs. These efforts make it easier and more appealing than ever for residents and visitors to drive electric.

Florida registered about 36% more EVs in 2024 than 2023, an increase bigger than the vast majority of the country, according to data from automotive research firm S&P Global Mobility.

“Fundamentally, I think people buy EVs because they are the lowest cost of over the life of the vehicle,” said Dawn Shirreffs, Florida director of the Environmental Defense Fund.

“As Florida continues to be less and less affordable, (buying an EV) is a strategy people are using so they can continue to live here,” Shirreffs added.

April 1 Special Elections in Florida

During 2020 to 2024, Democrats moved America forward in the most historic, far-reaching, and important clean energy legislation in history, supporting vital clean energy initiatives such as electric vehicles and solar power.

The EV industry is under attack by Republicans. Billions of dollars of federal EV charging funding has been illegally frozen. Attempts are under way to delete the federal EV tax credit, which helps our automakers compete with China, and helps automakers offer more good-paying American jobs.

Gay Valimont (Democratic Party) is running in a special election to the U.S. House to represent Florida’s 1st Congressional District. Vote for Valimont in the special general election on April 1, 2025.

Josh Weil (Democratic Party) is running in a special election to the U.S. House to represent Florida’s 6th Congressional District. Vote for Weil in the special general election on April 1, 2025.

Now more than ever, forward-thinking individuals are needed to step up and support EVs and clean energy. Democrats are the leading party in supporting these important endeavors. Do everything you can to support these valiant candidates, and if you are a Florida resident, VOTE.

Duke Energy Florida Launches New EV Programs to Support Customers and Promote Sustainability

On March 18, 2025, Duke Energy Florida introduced three exciting new programs—Charger Prep Credit, Off-Peak Charging Credit, and Fleet Advisory Program—designed to offer residential and business customers more choices related to electric vehicles (EVs). These initiatives aim to make the transition to electric driving more affordable and convenient while supporting the state’s broader efforts toward sustainability.

Charger Prep Credit Program (Residential and Business Customers)

Duke Energy Florida’s Charger Prep Credit Program provides both residential and business customers with a one-time credit to help cover the costs of installing EV charging infrastructure. This includes expenses for new electric plug-in outlets, electrical wiring improvements, and other electrical upgrades required to support Level 2 or higher EV chargers. However, it is important to note that this credit does not cover the cost of the charging station hardware, software (if needed), or permit fees. This initiative is an excellent way to help customers ease the upfront costs associated with installing the necessary electrical infrastructure to support EV charging. Off-Peak Charging Credit Program (Residential Customers Only)

For residential customers, Duke Energy Florida offers the Off-Peak Charging Credit Program, which rewards customers for charging their EVs during off-peak hours when energy demand is typically lower. Eligible customers using a Level 2 charger can earn a $7.50 credit on their monthly electric bills for charging their EVs during specific off-peak times: Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., plus all weekends and holidays. Originally launched as a pilot program, the Off-Peak Charging Credit has now become a permanent offering with no enrollment cap. This program aims to encourage customers to charge their EVs during times of lower energy demand, which can help balance the load on the grid while providing financial savings. Learn more here.

Fleet Advisory Program (Business Customers Only)

Duke Energy Florida’s Fleet Advisory Program offers business customers the opportunity to receive up to $12,000 to help offset the cost of completing a fleet electrification study. This program is designed to help businesses explore the benefits of switching their fleet vehicles to electric options. By participating, companies can reduce their carbon footprint, lower operating costs, and enhance overall fleet efficiency. To qualify, businesses must operate a fleet of 20 or more light-duty vehicles, five or more medium/heavy-duty vehicles, or a combination of 10 or more light-duty and/or medium/heavy-duty vehicles. This program is an invaluable resource for companies looking to make a transition to a cleaner, more cost-effective fleet. Get more information here.
