Chargepoint and Charge Across Town Partner With CEC To Install Hundreds of EV Chargers at Apartments and Condos Across CA
In a significant move to boost electric mobility, California-based ChargePoint, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging networks, announced today its collaboration with Charge Across Town and the State of California. This partnership aims to install hundreds of EV chargers at multifamily properties across the state, including apartment complexes and condominiums. The new infrastructure will simplify and reduce the cost of EV charging for residents living in these buildings, thereby promoting a smoother transition to electric vehicles. This commitment to sustainable transportation solutions reflects their broader mission to reduce carbon emissions and create a greener California.
“As a company that was founded in California and is headquartered here, we’re honored to work with the California Energy Commission and Charge Across Town to build reliable, equitable, and accessible EV charging infrastructure for Californians,” said John Schott, Director, Public Private Partnerships, at ChargePoint. “Driving electric should be possible for everyone, and this partnership recognizes that charging should be accessible where drivers live, work and play. We’re proud of our strong track record of providing charging solutions that multifamily property owners and drivers rely on every day and look forward to continuing this important work.”
“One barrier to EV adoption is the inaccessibility to home charging, and lack of electric vehicle supply equipment infrastructure where it is needed most,” said Maureen Blanc, Director at Charge Across Town. “Working with ChargePoint in low income and disadvantaged communities, we have the opportunity to educate both multifamily building owners and residents on how EV charging works, the affordability and benefits of going electric, and the many state and local incentives available to these communities.”
ChargePoint’s commendable efforts have been recognized and supported by the California Energy Commission, which has awarded the company $4.25 million through the Reliable, Equitable, and Accessible Charging for Multifamily Housing (REACH) program. In collaboration with multifamily property owners and managers, ChargePoint will install hundreds of CPF50 and CT4000 electric vehicle charging ports, with a focus on inclusivity – 75 percent of these ports will be allocated to buildings in disadvantaged or low-income communities.
Furthermore, ChargePoint is teaming up with the non-profit organization Charge Across Town to educate building owners and residents about the benefits of electric vehicles and how smart EV charging infrastructure can make home charging a smooth and efficient process. With Charge Across Town’s involvement, there will be educational events organized at each building before and after the installation of EV chargers to ensure residents are well-informed. The organization will also continually collect feedback from building management to further improve this innovative initiative.
Through this project, it is projected that residents living in these multifamily buildings will drive over 2.7 million electric miles in the five years following the installation of the chargers. This will result in the elimination of more than 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions, which is akin to planting over 18 million trees and allowing them to grow for a decade.
ChargePoint, currently, has a driver plugging into one of its chargers every second. As electric vehicle sales are anticipated to skyrocket in the coming years with the introduction of more affordable options, the nearly 4.8 million Californians residing in multifamily properties will require home charging solutions. In response to this growing demand, ChargePoint, with its extensive experience in assorted parking solutions — from assigned, shared, and combined parking to portfolio-wide charging management software, stands ready to fulfill the unique charging needs of these EV drivers.
