Hyundai Steps Up U.S. Production, Brings New IONIQ Brand to China With Two Concept EVs
Hyundai Motor officially launched its IONIQ all-electric lineup brand in China on April 10, 2026, unveiling two design concept cars at a brand launch event in Beijing ahead of Auto China 2026, opening April 24.
IONIQ has earned its global credentials. The IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 each claimed hat-trick victories at the World Car Awards, and the IONIQ 6 N was named 2026 World Performance Car. Built on those foundations, Hyundai is now redefining IONIQ for China not as a product lineup but as a full mobility ecosystem tailored to local customers.
Future Chinese IONIQ models will carry planet names, each vehicle conceived as orbiting around the customer at the center of its own universe.

The first two concepts signal what that universe looks like. VENUS is a trend-setting sedan finished in Radiant Gold, with a single-curve silhouette, a lightweight frame-structured roof, and a transparent spoiler. Its driver-focused cockpit wraps around the occupant with layered mood lighting and a contrast of soft suede and chrome-gold seatback covers. A character called Lumi is integrated into the interior for a playful driver connection.

EARTH is a bold family SUV finished in Aurora Shield, balancing sharp edges with sculpted volumes and robust details including skid plates and exposed bolt accents. Inside, innovative air-hug seats made of soft air modules anchor a calm interior with tree shadow lighting, shy-tech hidden elements, and Beijing map patterns embedded in the design. A character called Aero adds a sense of discovery.
“We chose to be ‘The Origin’. Something entirely new — recognizable at a glance from a distance, with a powerful presence on the road, and delivering what we call a ‘Best in First Impression’. ‘The Origin’ is our declaration: ‘Lead, don’t follow’. It is the point from which our movement begins. Our ambition is to set a new direction,” said Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center at Hyundai Motor Company.
Hyundai also previewed China-specific technologies including locally developed autonomous driving systems and extended range electric vehicle options. The launch was accompanied by a brand film under the message “Open Your Universe.”
Hyundai Doubles Down on EVs in USA While Rivals Pull Back
Hyundai closed 2025 with its fifth consecutive record sales year in the United States, moving 901,686 vehicles and showing no signs of easing up. While Ford, Stellantis, and GM have been pulling back on EV commitments, Hyundai is moving in the opposite direction.
Electrified vehicles accounted for 30% of retail sales last year. The IONIQ 5 ranked fifth among the best-selling EVs in the country with 47,039 units, up 6% from 2024. By 2030, Hyundai wants electrified vehicles to represent 60% of its US sales, roughly 3.3 million units.
Production is scaling to match. The Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia currently builds the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9, with hybrid production starting later this year. The facility is expected to reach 500,000 units of annual capacity by 2028. Hyundai’s broader goal is to manufacture more than 80% of what it sells in the US domestically by the end of the decade.
On the technology side, Hyundai is targeting a 30% battery cost reduction, 15% higher energy density, and 15% shorter charging times by 2027. New cloud-based battery management systems will run real-time diagnostics across driving, charging, and rest periods. The company has already tracked durability data from over 50,000 IONIQ 5 vehicles, with most retaining more than 90% battery performance past 250,000 miles.
To soften the loss of the federal tax credit, Hyundai is offering up to $10,000 off 2026 IONIQ 5 trims, which now start at $35,000.
