New Volvo PHEVs Offer up to 124-Mile Electric Range for NA and Europe

Volvo Cars has launched long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 for European and American markets, with the updated XC60 rated at up to 124 miles of electric range and the XC90 at up to 99 miles under preliminary WLTP testing. Production is scheduled to begin later this fall, with orders already open in selected markets, including for Black Edition versions.

The new plug-in hybrids more than double the electric range of the existing XC60 and XC90 PHEVs, with Volvo attributing the increase to a larger floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor. A gasoline engine provides additional range when needed, while both models remain available as mild hybrids.

Volvo positions the long-range PHEVs as a bridge toward its fully electric lineup, with enough electric range for school drop-offs, daily commuting and weekend trips without tailpipe emissions. Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, said the XC60 and XC90, together with the all-electric EX60, provide a path to full electrification for customers. Volvo began customer deliveries of the EX60 earlier this year.

The XC60 also receives exterior and interior updates, including a redesigned grille, front bumper, hood, front fenders and wheels. Its Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have a new design, while the rear gains an updated tailgate, LED lamps and bumper with stronger horizontal lines. Inside are a new dashboard and door panels, wood decor, Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather and upgraded illumination.

The XC60 adds Volvo’s latest active safety technology, including automatic emergency steering and braking, plus an alert for approaching cyclists before a door is opened. Lane change assist and a 360-degree camera with 3D view use an upgraded sensing system with radars, cameras and other sensors.

An 11.2-inch display runs Volvo Car UX, while Google Gemini enables drivers to plan trips, find stops and manage messages using everyday language.

The seven-seat XC90 builds on its recent design and technology updates and now also includes Google Gemini. Its cabin combines premium materials, natural light and wood decor, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Both models will receive regular over-the-air software updates. Volvo says the long-range PHEVs support its sales and profitability goals while building on existing vehicle platforms.

The published range figures are preliminary WLTP ratings and are generally higher than U.S. EPA ratings. Actual range varies with temperature, weather, terrain, driving style, speed, vehicle specification and charge level. Feature availability also varies by market, and some features are optional or require customer opt-in.
