Monterra AI Becomes Licensed Engineering Firm
Monterra is now a licensed engineering firm, expanding beyond its SaaS platform to provide engineering services and permit-ready plan sets for electrical projects. David Kim, Co-Founder and CEO, announced the news on LinkedIn on September 22, 2026.
Founded by David Kim and Kelson Reiss, Monterra has spent the past several years helping contractors, EPCs and deployment teams plan and win EV charging projects. Customer demand for faster permitting led the company to expand into engineering, with Principal PEs Daniel Ihlenfeldt and Tyler Blauvelt leading the practice.
Monterra now provides engineering for EV charging, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power distribution for edge data centers, and other fast-moving electrical projects. The company is also taking an innovative approach to engineering by having its professional engineers direct AI engineering assistants developed in-house.
The goal is to amplify professional engineering expertise and judgment with AI-driven productivity, allowing engineers to spend more time on technical decisions while reducing time spent on repetitive work.
Monterra says the approach is already helping customers including DMH Electric and EVolved EV Charging Solutions move projects through engineering faster, either as an engineering partner or an extension of their internal teams.
As demand grows for AI infrastructure, electrification and additional power capacity, faster engineering and permitting can help deployment teams move projects from planning and design into construction more efficiently. Monterra is positioning its expanded engineering practice to address that need while maintaining PE oversight and professional standards.

Monterra AI Brings AI Speed to EV Charging Engineering
As EV charging, battery storage and electrification projects keep growing in North America, engineering and permitting can become a significant bottleneck. Monterra is taking a different approach, combining licensed professional engineers with AI-powered tools to deliver PE-stamped electrical plans faster.
Monterra provides engineering consulting for commercial electrical and electrification projects, including EV charging, fleet electrification, battery storage and microgrids, and edge data centers. The company produces stamped, permit-ready electrical drawing packages designed to move projects from concept to construction more efficiently.
For EV charging contractors, CPOs and EPCs, Monterra supports projects ranging from individual Level 2 and DC fast charging installations to multi-site fleet and heavy truck charging deployments. Typical plan sets include site plans, single-line diagrams, panel schedules, NEC load and short-circuit calculations, conduit routing, trenching details, voltage-drop calculations and equipment schedules. Monterra says every utility, AHJ, and client brings their unique nuance and requirements, and their engine learns and encodes these – so every project gets better than the last for clients.
The company’s engineering practice is built around a human-led AI model. Monterra says its AI tools assist engineers rather than replace them. Every drawing that leaves the firm is reviewed and stamped by a licensed U.S. professional engineer, with engineers maintaining responsibility for engineering decisions.
The workflow is designed to shorten the path from project intake to approved permit. Monterra says they deliver schematic designs within 48-72 hours for typical projects – to align on design questions and flag risks early – followed by permit-ready plan sets in days, not weeks.
Monterra also continues to offer software that helps EV charging teams rapidly generate preliminary designs, estimates, and proposals. The platform can take a site from concept to a layout in minutes, while its estimating and quoting tools help teams develop project costs, bills of materials and proposals. Monterra reports that its software has helped EV charging teams assess and propose more than 62,000 charging ports and can boost project throughput for fast-growing EV charging teams.
That combination of engineering expertise and AI-assisted productivity could be particularly relevant as charging deployments become larger and more complex. Instead of treating engineering as a separate bottleneck between planning and construction, Monterra is building a workflow that connects site design, electrical engineering, estimating, and permitting.
For an industry racing to deploy more charging infrastructure, the ability to produce accurate, permit-ready designs quickly can be just as important as the hardware being installed. Monterra is positioning its engineering and software platform to help contractors, EPCs and charging developers move projects from an idea on a map to energized infrastructure with fewer delays.
