Lucid Delivers First Gravity EV for Uber Robotaxi Partnership

Lucid Motors officially delivered the first Gravity Robotaxi EV to autonomous vehicle company Nuro last week, marking a milestone in its three-way alliance with Uber. The handoff represents the beginning of a bold effort to put 20,000 autonomous Lucid Gravity SUVs into Uber’s global network over the next six years.

The Gravity SUV, Lucid’s flagship electric utility vehicle, will be outfitted with Nuro’s Level 4 self-driving technology, including automotive-grade sensors and hardware. The system will allow the vehicles to operate with full autonomy in defined conditions, enabling a seamless robotaxi experience for Uber riders.

Uber has committed a $300 million investment in Lucid to help jumpstart the program. Additional multi-hundred-million-dollar investments will be made into both Nuro and Lucid as the partnership deepens. The first prototype Gravity robotaxi is already driving autonomously on a closed circuit at Nuro’s Las Vegas proving grounds.

“Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “We’re thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi program, purpose-built just for the Uber platform, to safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.”

Lucid’s interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, highlighted the significance of the deal.

“This investment from Uber further validates Lucid’s fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles. Our industry-leading range and spacious, premium interiors are perfect for ridesharing. This is the start of our path to extend our innovation and technology leadership into this multi-trillion-dollar market.”

Nuro CEO and co-founder Jiajun Zhu added that the partnership combines proven AV technology with global scale.

“By bringing together Nuro’s self-driving expertise, Lucid’s advanced EV platform, and Uber’s massive reach, we’re enabling a robotaxi service designed to reach millions worldwide,” said Zhu.

The Lucid Gravity, which offers an EPA-estimated 450-mile range, will be built at the company’s Casa Grande, Arizona, facility. The necessary hardware for autonomy will be integrated directly on Lucid’s assembly line, then commissioned with Nuro’s software for Uber’s fleet operations. Uber plans to launch the first robotaxi service in a major U.S. city in late 2026.

Despite earlier supply chain challenges, Lucid says production of the Gravity is back on track. Winterhoff noted in a recent interview that Lucid has “so many orders” for the Gravity that it will continue honoring the federal $7,500 EV tax credit for customers through the end of the year, even as the incentive expires nationwide.

While rivals like Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW have slowed their electrification push, Winterhoff reaffirmed Lucid’s commitment to remain a pure EV company. He emphasized that the loss of federal incentives will have limited impact, given Lucid’s positioning in the luxury EV market.

With the first delivery now complete, Lucid, Nuro, and Uber are betting big that the combination of long-range EVs, advanced autonomy, and global ridesharing scale will make robotaxis a mainstream reality within the next decade.
