Driving electric vehicle adoption

Electric Vehicle Fast Chargers Dedicated at Kapalua, Hawaiʻi Airport

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation has officially opened a new electric vehicle fast charging station at Kapalua Airport as part of the state’s growing National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. Dedicated on May 13, 2026, the new West Maui charging hub features four 150-kilowatt DC fast chargers located in the airport parking lot and is now open to the public 24 hours a day.

The $3.2 million project includes chargers equipped with CCS, NACS, and CHAdeMO connectors, allowing compatibility with a broad range of electric vehicles. Charging rates are set at $0.44 per kWh from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and $0.57 per kWh overnight, reflecting lower daytime electricity costs tied to increased solar generation across Hawaiʻi.

The Kapalua Airport location becomes Hawaiʻi’s third publicly accessible NEVI-funded charging station, following earlier installations at the Kahului Park and Ride on Maui and the Aloha Tower Marketplace on Oʻahu.

“We are keeping the momentum going to achieve Hawai‘i’s clean energy goals as we are on our way in developing 11 NEVI charging stations across the state. Working with our federal, state and private-sector partners we are building the infrastructure needed to create a more sustainable and resilient transportation future,” said HDOT Director Ed Sniffen. “Hawai‘i has seen steady growth in electric vehicle adoption and the expansion of our EV charging network is critical to supporting that growth.”

HDOT reported that the first two NEVI stations have already recorded more than 53,000 charging sessions and delivered nearly 1.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1.2 million kilograms.

The state plans to build a total of 11 NEVI charging stations across Hawaiʻi, with additional projects underway on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island. Future locations include Princeville Library, Mililani Mauka Park and Ride, Hilo Civic Center, Waimea Civic Center, and Kona.
