Brooklyn, New York-based curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging innovator it’s electric announced on LinkedIn that the company is testing its its brand-new, ground-breaking V2G curbside EV charger With the CEC in partnership with the University of Delaware and University of California, Berkeley.
In September 2025, EVinfo.net reported that it’s electric secured a $1.1 million California Energy Commission (CEC) grant to develop and commercialize what the company describes as the world’s first curbside vehicle-to-grid (V2G) EV charger. Working with UC Berkeley and the University of Delaware, the company plans to bring the technology to market by 2028.
Unlike conventional chargers, the system can both charge an EV and send electricity from the vehicle’s battery back to the grid. The technology could turn millions of EVs parked on California streets into distributed energy resources, helping utilities manage peak demand, improve grid reliability and reduce the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades.
The project also includes development of a J3068 Active Cable, designed to enable bidirectional charging while connecting driver account information to the charging cable. The technology could make V2G participation more accessible to drivers without garages or private parking, expanding access to grid services and helping California accelerate EV adoption.

One of the biggest challenges facing urban EV adoption is charging access. Millions of drivers live in apartments or homes without private garages, making convenient overnight charging difficult. Brooklyn-based it’s electric is addressing that problem with an innovative curbside EV charging model designed specifically for cities.
The company partners with property owners to install low-profile Level 2 chargers along public curbs using spare electrical capacity from the property. It’s electric handles the permitting, installation and maintenance, with no upfront cost to participating property owners. In return, property owners can earn passive income from the charging infrastructure.
The company takes a different approach to charger design. Its curbside units eliminate screens, touchpads, credit-card readers and permanently attached cables, creating a smaller and less intrusive charger intended to blend into residential neighborhoods. Drivers receive a lightweight portable charging cable that allows them to plug into chargers across the it’s electric network.

This approach could help solve a major infrastructure gap as EV adoption expands. Public charging is particularly important for urban residents who cannot install a charger at home. Instead of requiring large dedicated charging sites, it’s electric uses existing electrical infrastructure and available curb space to distribute charging throughout neighborhoods.
The company is expanding its network across U.S. cities, with operations planned or underway in markets including Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Jersey City, Alexandria, Yonkers and Newburgh. More cities are expected to come online as the company expands.
