Driving electric vehicle adoption

it’s electric Brings First Building-Powered Curbside EV Charging to Yonkers, NY

it’s electric has officially unveiled the first building-powered curbside EV charger in the City of Yonkers New York, marking an important step toward expanding equitable access to charging infrastructure for residents who rely on street parking.

The project addresses one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in the United States. While many EV owners can charge at home, roughly 70 million drivers across the country depend on on-street parking and often lack convenient charging options near their homes.

“The clean energy transition only works if it works for everyone. That means EV adoption needs to be a viable and convenient option not just for homeowners with a garage, but also for the 70 million street-parking drivers across America. By weaving EV charging directly into the fabric of their neighborhoods, Yonkers is stepping up to meet that challenge head-on. We’re proud to be their partner in making equitable access to charging a reality for every resident,” said Julia Brooks, Project Designer at it’s electric.

The installation was designed to simplify deployment while minimizing costs and infrastructure challenges. The building-powered system requires no utility upgrades, no lengthy utility approval processes, and no direct cost to the city, while helping expand access to clean transportation and improve local air quality.

Founded in Brooklyn, New York, it’s electric is an EV charging infrastructure company focused on bringing curbside charging to dense urban neighborhoods. Rather than relying on traditional utility upgrades, the company connects chargers to spare electrical capacity within nearby buildings, creating a faster and more cost effective approach to deployment. This model allows property owners to generate revenue while expanding public charging access for residents.

The company’s charging solutions are specifically designed for cities where many drivers do not have access to private driveways or garages. By integrating charging infrastructure directly into existing neighborhoods, it’s electric aims to accelerate EV adoption in underserved communities and create a more equitable charging ecosystem.

One of it’s electric’s most distinctive innovations is its detachable charging cable system, which is designed to reduce street clutter, improve reliability, and discourage theft and vandalism. Unlike traditional public charging stations that have permanently attached cables, drivers using it’s electric chargers bring their own lightweight cable and connect it to both the vehicle and the charging unit during a charging session. The company provides these cables to drivers for no charge.

Once charging is complete, the cable is removed and stored by the driver, leaving the curbside charger compact and unobtrusive. This approach helps cities maintain cleaner sidewalks, reduces maintenance costs for operators, and eliminates one of the most common points of failure at public charging stations. The design is particularly well suited for dense urban environments where pedestrian space is limited and charging infrastructure must seamlessly integrate into existing streetscapes without creating obstacles for residents.

Why Yonkers

The city aims to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Driven by the Yonkers Climate Action Plan and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the city’s sustainability goals focus on clean energy, waste reduction, green infrastructure, and clean transportation. The deployment was funded through grants from AcceliGOV, a leading cities initiative that helps communities explore innovative solutions through fully funded, no-cost, low-risk projects, as well as Uptake Alliance, a corporate venture development platform that creates business development opportunities for corporations by adopting climate tech solutions for New York State.

Why this location

50 Warburton is located within walking distance to several large apartment complexes offering convenient overnight charging for residents, while also being situated along a busy commercial corridor, allowing for convenient daytime opportunity charging. The property owner, Dolphin Property Services, has been a leading example of the kind of forward-thinking partnership that is driving the expansion of EV infrastructure.

As cities across the country work to meet sustainability goals, projects like the Yonkers deployment demonstrate how innovative infrastructure models can help make electric vehicle ownership more practical and accessible for everyone.
