Sprocket Power Builds Resilient Managed Microgrid for Hampton Jitney, Deploying Next-Generation Fleet Electrification

In September 2026, Sprocket Power, Inc., a provider of advanced commercial microgrid solutions, announced a landmark partnership with Hampton Jitney, the family-owned Long Island transportation provider, to commission a custom behind-the-meter managed microgrid at Hampton Jitney’s Calverton facility.

The completed installation makes Hampton Jitney one of the first commercial transit operators in New York to deploy behind-the-meter microgrid technology to support fleet electrification. The project combines on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, commercial battery energy storage (BESS), and intelligent system management and optimization software.

The microgrid is designed to buffer Hampton Jitney against volatile grid demand charges, generate clean energy on-site to offset utility energy costs, support the local grid through demand response participation and energy exports, and provide a clean and cost-effective energy source for fleets charging at the Calverton location.

Democratizing Microgrid Infrastructure For Mid-Market Fleets

The partnership reflects Sprocket Power’s focus on simplifying and delivering complex energy assets to middle-market businesses. Mid-sized regional fleet operators represent an important commercial segment that has historically faced significant barriers to deploying comprehensive energy systems because of their engineering and capital requirements.

Grid Independence And Regional Transit Hub Expansion

The microgrid’s automated software management is designed to provide continuous, cost-effective capacity and energy based on Hampton Jitney’s transit schedules.

The BESS captures solar energy during periods of peak midday production and dispatches that stored energy during high-demand intervals. This helps shield electric fleet charging from peak utility rates while maintaining charging capacity during periods of summer peak demand and grid strain.

The current deployment includes charging infrastructure along with portable DC fast charging (DCFC). The facility has been engineered to support an immediate Phase 2 expansion that will add 1 MW of dedicated DCFC charging capacity. The expansion is intended to position the Calverton facility as a primary commercial charging hub for external regional electric fleets operating across Long Island.

Supporting New York CLCPA Goals And Emissions Reductions

The project is designed to advance the goals of New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) by deploying customer-sited distributed energy resources that can actively support the regional electric grid.

The microgrid is projected to eliminate 590 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually over its operational lifespan by displacing transportation diesel fuel consumption and offsetting the need for utility-supplied regional gas-peaker generation during periods of peak demand.

By storing renewable electricity, optimizing electricity drawn from the grid, and exporting available capacity resources, the installation is designed to reduce localized utility congestion and support additional sustainable infrastructure investment across Long Island’s East End.
