Hyundai Pushes IONIQ 9 Exports as Global Launch Accelerates

Hyundai is shifting into high gear with the global launch of its new flagship electric SUV, the IONIQ 9. After a quiet start in South Korea, the company is turning to international markets to build momentum. The three-row EV is now arriving in the United States and Europe, where Hyundai expects stronger demand.

Initial sales in South Korea have been slower than expected, prompting the company to increase focus on exports. Since shipments began in April, IONIQ 9 exports have grown quickly. Hyundai exported 539 units in April, 1,482 in May, and 1,781 in June. These increases come as the company prepares for the official sales launch in Europe, where the IONIQ 9 will start at £64,995, or about $87,500.

The vehicle features a 110 kilowatt-hour battery and offers an estimated 385 miles of range on the WLTP cycle. Under EPA testing in the US, the range is rated at up to 335 miles. Hyundai is using a two-track global strategy, leaning on both Europe and the US to drive demand.

In the US, Hyundai is producing the IONIQ 9 at its Metaplant America facility in Georgia, alongside the updated 2025 IONIQ 5. Production began in April and remains steady. The company built 2,382 IONIQ 9 models in May and 1,803 in June. US sales totaled 1,013 units through June, with numbers falling from 1,009 in April to 867 in May and then 767 in June. These figures highlight the urgency behind Hyundai’s international push.

Despite the decline in monthly US sales, Hyundai has kept its pricing promises. The 2026 IONIQ 9 remains competitively priced, with lease offers starting at $419 per month. The updated 2025 IONIQ 5 is even more affordable, with lease deals beginning at just $179 per month. To attract new buyers, Hyundai is also offering a free ChargePoint Level 2 home charger with every purchase or lease of a new IONIQ 9 or IONIQ 5.

As Hyundai moves forward, its focus is clear. The company is counting on the IONIQ 9 to perform better overseas, where family-sized electric vehicles are in growing demand. With solid specs, competitive pricing, and added incentives, Hyundai is positioning the IONIQ 9 as a key player in the global EV market.

Hyundai IONIQ 9: A New Era of Premium Electric SUVs

Since its debut in November 2024, Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 electric SUV has been recognized as one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of 2025. Building on the success of the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, both of which earned triple honors at the World Car of the Year Awards in 2022 and 2023, the 2026 IONIQ 9 marks a major step forward in Hyundai’s commitment to electrification. It is one of 21 EVs Hyundai plans to introduce by 2030.

The IONIQ 9 rides on Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This architecture supports a flat floor for better interior space, robust safety through optimized structural engineering, and an enhanced power electronics system. Features like an optimized gear ratio and a two-stage inverter support better efficiency and performance on steep terrain.

Advanced Lithium-ion Battery

The advanced lithium-ion battery delivers 110.3 kilowatt-hours of energy. The Long-Range RWD model uses a 160-kilowatt motor and achieves an EPA-estimated range of 335 miles with 19-inch wheels. The AWD version adds a 66.1-kilowatt front motor. For maximum power, the Performance AWD model features dual 157.3-kilowatt motors for front and rear axles.

The IONIQ 9 supports 350-kilowatt DC fast charging, reaching 10 to 80 percent battery in about 24 minutes. It also features bidirectional vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability and a versatile 400V/800V multi-charging system that adapts to different infrastructure needs.

Smooth Ride, Powerful Torque

Aerodynamics play a key role in energy efficiency. The IONIQ 9 incorporates a new dual-motion active air flap system that opens only when cooling is needed and closes to reduce drag. The system uses a combination of straight and rotational movement to minimize air gaps and improve airflow. Other aerodynamic features include a 3D-shaped underbody cover, low-drag wheels, and hidden antennas.

Ride quality is smooth and refined, supported by MacPherson struts in the front, a multi-link rear suspension, hydro-bushing, and self-leveling dampers. Despite its size, the IONIQ 9 handles with composure and offers responsive steering, minimal body roll, and confident grip through corners.

The Chassis Domain Control Unit further enhances driving dynamics with features such as dynamic torque vectoring and lateral wind stability control. Terrain Mode Select allows drivers to adapt the vehicle’s performance to different road conditions including snow and dirt.

Comfortable Interior

The interior is engineered for quiet comfort. Triple door seals, acoustic glass, and ANC-R (Active Noise Control-Road) technology reduce wind and road noise. This creates an ideal environment for the available premium BOSE 14-speaker sound system, which includes 5.1-channel surround sound to deliver immersive audio.

Technology plays a central role in the IONIQ 9 driving experience. A panoramic curved display houses a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment monitor. The start button is integrated into the column-mounted shift-by-wire system for a clean layout. Drivers can monitor charge status through green indicator dots on the steering wheel, which turn red when reverse gear is engaged.

The IONIQ 9 blends bold design with practical features. Inside, the cabin is spacious, refined, and filled with natural light from the panoramic sunroof. The interior is designed to feel like a modern lounge, using elliptical design elements, calming tones, and clever use of space. With flexible seating for six or seven, and a flat floor, the vehicle offers exceptional comfort and roominess for all passengers.

The first and second rows feature Relaxation Seats that fully recline and include leg rests, ideal for resting while the vehicle charges. Hyundai also introduces its Ergo Motion driver’s seat, engineered for long-distance comfort and reduced fatigue.

Interior accessibility is improved by the slidable Universal Island 2.0 console. This center console includes bidirectional armrests and can slide up to 7.5 inches, offering flexible storage and easier access for passengers in the second row. The upper and lower trays provide a combined 0.64 cubic feet of storage.

Cargo space is generous. With the third-row seats folded, the rear cargo area offers up to 46.7 cubic feet of space. With all three rows in use, capacity is 21.9 cubic feet. There is also a front trunk with up to 3.1 cubic feet of storage in rear-wheel-drive models and 1.84 cubic feet in all-wheel-drive models. These spaces are ideal for items like charging cables or travel gear.

Advanced Safety

Advanced safety features are extensive. Hyundai’s driver assistance suite includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Warning, Driver Attention Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and many others. A new center airbag, located between the front seats, enhances occupant protection.

Highway Drive Assist 2 (HDA 2) adds lane centering, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and lane change assist. The IONIQ 9 also supports an EV Route Planner, energy use monitoring, and torque control display to help drivers manage performance and range.

Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 uses cameras and ultrasonic sensors to identify parking spaces and handle all steering and throttle inputs automatically. Drivers can use this feature from inside the vehicle or remotely. It supports perpendicular, parallel, and diagonal parking using line recognition and obstacle avoidance.

Impressive Technology

Wireless over-the-air updates keep vehicle systems current. Hyundai Digital Key 2 allows for easy vehicle access via smartphone, while the integrated wireless charging pad includes cooling to protect devices during charging.

The cabin includes six USB-C ports that each support up to 100 watts of output using Hyundai-supplied cables. When the high-output Utility Mode is activated, power is drawn directly from the main battery to charge devices quickly and reliably.

The IONIQ 9 brings together Hyundai’s most advanced technology, premium comfort, and electric innovation in a spacious and capable package. It reflects the automaker’s clear strategy for the EV future, offering a refined and feature-rich alternative in the competitive SUV segment.

EVinfo.net’s Take

Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 is indeed impressive. We are glad to see it supports 350-kilowatt DC fast charging, reaching 10 to 80 percent battery in about 24 minutes. It’s bidirectional vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability and 400V/800V multi-charging system are also important. We hope all new EVs support these features.

The US has been needing larger all-electric BEVs such as this for some time now. Hyundai Group’s Kia EV9 is an excellent choice, but was the only large electric SUV available for a while, it just entered the market recently.

Because of the decrease of popularity for minivans, those with large families or the need to have more room have been left out of the EV revolution for the most part. In the US, the only fully electric minivan currently available is the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. The VW ID. Buzz has not been selling well, due to a variety of issues.

EVinfo.net is excited to see the IONIQ 9 selling in the US, and we recommend all Hyundai group EVs, with the exception of fuel cell vehicles.
