Driving electric vehicle adoption

UK’s Co Charger Allows Home EV Chargers to Be Rented Out to Drivers Without Home Charging

In North America and Europe, the lack of home EV charging is a big problem holding back electric vehicle (EV) adoption, which brings clean air to everyone. EVs also bring lower costs to drivers who can charge at home. For those who can’t charge at home, the lower total cost of ownership (TCO) that EVs offer when making the switch from gas can be reduced, or in some cases even be higher due to high public charging costs, especially in the UK.

Electric vehicles should be accessible to everyone, not just drivers with a private driveway. Co Charger, located in Exeter, UK, is addressing that gap by enabling homeowners with EV chargers to rent them to the 15 million UK households that cannot install a charger of their own, accelerating the shift to electric mobility.

As the UK’s leading community charging app, Co Charger connects “Hosts” who have home chargers with nearby “Chargees” who need reliable, local charging. The app manages the entire process, including introductions, messaging, scheduling, and secure payments. The result is a seamless experience that delivers the core advantages of home charging: convenience, predictability, and cost control.

The opportunity is significant. There are more than one million residential chargers installed across the UK, far exceeding the number of public charge points. Yet these private chargers are utilized less than 6% of the time on average and are typically located in residential neighborhoods where charging demand is growing. By unlocking this underused infrastructure, Co Charger expands access without requiring new grid upgrades or large capital deployment.

This model is particularly important for the 40–50% of motorists who are unable to install a home charger due to living in flats, rental properties, or homes without off-street parking. Community charging allows them to benefit from dependable, near-home charging and makes switching to an electric vehicle both practical and affordable.

Keith Budden, Head of International Partnerships at not for profit, zero emission transport experts, Cenex, is a Co Charger user, and is shown in the photo below. Budden spoke about sharing his home charger in a Linkedin post.

Budden said: “I share my home charger, do you? I now have two neighbors who don’t have off street parking who regularly use my home charger. The photo shows Doug who has just bought a new electric Vauxhall Motors Ltd Combo Life having his first charge! He joins Bruce Stokes who has been charging his Polestar most Sunday nights for the last year or so.”

Budden continued: “There are multiple benefits of charger sharing; providing a reliable and cost effective charging service to people without off-street parking, improved asset utilization thus reducing the environmental impact of the charger and also helping build stronger communities, as this is a way of getting to know your neighbors.”

Joel Teague, CEO at Co Charger, said: “Buying patterns show that the ability to have home charging is a major factor in whether drivers switch to EVs. For over five years now the Co Charger app has been addressing this barrier by giving those without home charging the key benefits of convenience, dependability and affordability that make EVs viable without home charging. With over a million home chargers unused for an average 96% of the time, it makes complete sense to use an app to make it easy to share them within neighbourhoods. It works brilliantly for all concerned, with everyone getting to ditch fossil fuel cars for EVs, and hosts getting significant income in return for sharing their under-utilised chargers. The only losers are the oil companies!”

Power Hero’s Innovative Cameo™ Adapter Enables Property Owners to Monetize Underused Chargers

In November 2025, EVinfo.net reported on Power Hero’s innovative Cameo™ adapter. Power Hero introduced the Cameo™ adapter, a device that transforms private Level 2 chargers and standard outlets into shared, revenue-generating charging assets. By connecting existing infrastructure to a cloud-based platform, Cameo enables property owners to monetize underused chargers while expanding affordable EV access, particularly for the 117 million Americans living in multifamily housing. Power Hero is now accepting investments.

The system functions like an Airbnb-style network for EV charging. Hosts attach the adapter to their charger, and Power Hero manages listing visibility, reservations, and secure payments. This approach avoids costly new construction and large capital investments, instead leveraging the estimated 5 million home Level 2 chargers already installed across the U.S.

Cameo is designed to address persistent industry challenges, including charger availability, reliability concerns, pricing transparency, and equity in access. By activating idle residential chargers, it helps fill charging deserts where public infrastructure is not economically viable, reduces charge anxiety, and gives drivers the ability to locate and reserve nearby home charging when needed.
