APTA Supports Better Understanding of Zero Emission Buses at 2026 Event, October 4–7
Public transportation is becoming one of the most visible proving grounds for the transition to zero-emission transportation. APTA’s comprehensive approach to fleet electrification matters because electrifying a transit fleet is not as simple as purchasing electric buses. A transit agency must ensure that vehicles can complete their assigned routes, return to the depot, recharge reliably and get back into service on schedule. The momentum is already evident. APTA reported that the number of zero-emission transit buses in use increased 78% between 2020 and 2022. Every new deployment gives agencies more real-world experience with range, charging, maintenance, energy consumption and fleet management.
The significance extends beyond transit. Electric buses can eliminate tailpipe emissions in communities where people live, work and walk. That makes transit electrification an important clean-air strategy, particularly in densely populated areas and along heavily traveled routes. It also reduces the transportation sector’s reliance on gasoline and diesel, strengthening the case for domestically generated electricity as a transportation energy source.
Zero-emission buses also demonstrate something the broader EV market needs: electrification can work for demanding, high-mileage transportation. Transit buses operate predictable routes, accumulate substantial mileage and spend much of their working lives carrying passengers. If agencies can reliably electrify those operations, the argument that electric vehicles are limited to short-distance or low-use applications becomes increasingly difficult to sustain.
