Xeal Launches Laitent, Using Idle EV Charging Capacity for Edge AI Compute
Xeal launched Laitent, which it describes as the world’s first edge inference compute network using idle electric vehicle charging capacity. The company plans to use more than 200 MW of permitted and installed electrical infrastructure across more than 1,600 properties to provide compute capacity. Xeal announced the news on September 18, 2026.
Xeal, which has one of the five largest Level 2 EV charging footprints in the U.S., plans to deploy more than 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs alongside its EV charging infrastructure. The company is a member of NVIDIA Inception.
Xeal has also established partnerships with Rafay Systems for AI infrastructure orchestration, Spectrum Business for dedicated enterprise-grade fiber supporting inference workloads, dozens of real estate and property managers, and a Tier 1 inference provider for up to 5 MW of compute.
The first Laitent Pod is scheduled to come online with partner JVM Realty by the end of 2026.

Xeal’s approach uses electrical capacity that is already available at EV charging sites. EV charging installations are permitted for a maximum energy load, but the sites typically operate at less than 10% of their permitted capacity. Laitent is designed to use the remaining 90% for compute.
The unused energy capacity is routed through the Laitent Pod using Xeal’s dynamic power orchestration software. The system can activate a single slice of a single GPU or support a distributed network operating across a metropolitan area while meeting performance service-level agreements.
“As AI adoption grows, infrastructure must become more distributed, flexible and energy efficient, placing the right workloads where power and capacity are available,” said Marc Spieler, senior managing director for the Global Energy Industry at NVIDIA. “By pairing NVIDIA accelerated computing with Xeal’s existing grid-connected EV charging footprint, Laitent offers an innovative way to bring low-latency inference closer to users while making better use of infrastructure that has already been built.”
Haseeb Budhani, CEO of Rafay Systems, said the industry has been seeking ways to bring inference closer to users without waiting years for data center construction.

Each Laitent Pod is approximately the size of a single parking space and can contain up to 48 GPUs. The pods use self-contained independent cooling, require no water hookup and operate at less than 65 decibels, which Xeal compares to the noise level of a washing machine.
Laitent Pods are designed to be located in metropolitan areas, which Laitent calls the Metro Edge. The company says this positioning can provide latency below 20 milliseconds, reducing the delay associated with running inference workloads from more distant data centers.
Laitent also provides property owners with potential ancillary revenue. Xeal says a Laitent Pod can add as much as $1 million in property value while requiring little to no upfront investment from the property owner.

Beyond the initial 200 MW of installed charging capacity, Xeal plans to unlock more than 1 GW of existing electrical headroom across real estate and EV charging deployments.
