Driving electric vehicle adoption

Alexandria, Virginia Offers New Multifamily EV Charging Incentives

In April 2025, the City of Alexandria, Virginia, announced an exciting new program—Plug In Alexandria—designed to accelerate access to electric vehicle (EV) charging for residents of condominiums, apartments, and other multi-family housing communities.

Plug In Alexandria is a new initiative that helps multi-family communities in the City of Alexandria install Level 2 EV chargers. Whether you’re part of a condo association, homeowner’s association, or managing an apartment complex, this program offers expert guidance and financial assistance to make adding EV charging stations easier and more affordable.

Eligible applicants can get back 30% of their electric vehicle (EV) charger installation costs, up to $10,000. Communities in low-income areas may qualify for up to $15,000 in support from the city.

EVs are quieter, cleaner, and more energy-efficient than traditional gas vehicles. They produce zero tailpipe emissions, making them a vital part of America’s push for a more sustainable, low-carbon future. Encouraging EV adoption is also a key step in meeting Climate Change Action goals, while saving drivers money at the same time.

Why It Matters: Cost Savings for Residents, Added Value for Property Owners

Most EV owners prefer the convenience of charging at home. But for many residents of multi-family buildings, lack of access to chargers can be a deal-breaker. By installing EV charging stations, multi-family communities can offer a forward-thinking amenity that attracts buyers and renters while contributing to climate goals. These installations make good financial sense, as well as being great for the environment.

EVinfo.net’s Take

EVinfo.net congratulates the forward-thinking City of Alexandria, Virginia, for this fantastic program. Multifamily EV driver residents are a vastly under-served community, and we encourage all cities across America to follow Alexandria’s excellent example by establishing their own EV charging incentives.

The lack of Multifamily EV Charging is a significant barrier to EV adoption for multi-unit dwellers in America. The National Association of Home Builders reported that American multifamily housing comprised 31.4% of housing in 2019, meaning that nearly a third of all Americans can’t charge at home since only a fraction of these housing units offer EV charging.

Many companies have stepped up to fill the need to provide condos, apartments, and other multifamily units with much-needed EV charging. Important elections are coming up in Virginia on November 4, 2025. Support Virginia Democrats. Democrats created the strong economy America had in January 2025, now decimated by tariffs. Democrats have been the most passionate and effective supporters of clean energy and EVs. Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) was confirmed in April as the presumptive Democratic nominee in the 2025 gubernatorial race in Virginia.
