Rivian Giving a Tremendous Boost to Georgia’s Economy, Restarting Plant
Rivian is making major moves in Georgia as it prepares to resume construction of its long-awaited $5 billion electric vehicle (EV) factory and establish a new East Coast headquarters in Atlanta. The EV maker will host two events next month to mark the restart of its Georgia plant project: a community gathering on September 14, followed by a formal kickoff ceremony on September 16 attended by state leaders, stakeholders, and government officials.
The plant, located near Social Circle, is slated to begin production in 2028 with capacity for about 200,000 vehicles annually. The milestone follows a challenging period for Rivian, which paused construction in March 2024 to cut costs and prioritized launching its R2 SUV at its existing Normal, Illinois facility. Rivian secured new momentum earlier this year when it won final approval for a $6.6 billion Department of Energy loan. While those funds are available through 2028, the company must resume construction in Georgia before gaining access.
Support from Georgia leaders has been central to Rivian’s progress. Forward-thinking Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock have backed Rivian and other clean energy investments that are fueling economic growth across the state. Their strong support reflects how the EV industry is vital to America’s economic growth.
The plant project represents one of the largest single industrial investments in Georgia’s history and is expected to create 7,500 direct jobs, with tens of thousands more supported through suppliers, logistics, and local services. According to state estimates, the plant will generate billions in long-term tax revenue and significantly strengthen Georgia’s position as a national hub for clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

Alongside its factory project, Rivian is strengthening its Georgia presence with a new East Coast headquarters in Atlanta. Announced in July, the office is currently under construction and expected to open by year’s end. The site will initially employ about 100 workers and ultimately grow to 500, supporting the company’s broader operations in the state.
“Atlanta embodies so much that makes Georgia great—top talent, exceptional creativity, and a desire to always be moving forward,” said Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe.
Despite its ambitious plans, Rivian continues to navigate industry headwinds. Like all other automakers, it has been challenged by economically damaging tariffs and wildly shifting trade policies. At AutoTech2025 in June, Chris Nevers, Rivian’s senior director of global policy development, emphasized the importance of flexibility while staying focused on long-term goals.
“You know your North Star, and you have to know what you can either be flexible on or need to be flexible on,” Nevers said.
On August 8, Kelley Blue Book reported on how tariffs will raise new and used vehicle prices, including EVs. Shoppers can expect the tariffs to increase new car prices by as much as $6,000 on vehicles priced under $40,000. Tariffs do not directly affect previously owned cars, however, they will affect car buying, as would-be new car buyers looking to avoid tariff increases could flood the used car market.
With the Georgia factory back on track, a new Atlanta headquarters underway, and strong state support, Rivian is reaffirming its commitment to the U.S. EV market. The coming months will be pivotal as the company lays the foundation for growth in one of the nation’s most competitive clean energy landscapes.
EVinfo.net’s Take
KUDOS to Rivian, Ossoff, Warnock and the previous administration’s approval of the $6.6B DOE loan. Rivian, along with other great automotive leaders like Ford and GM, are boldly moving America toward fully electric transportation, despite all barriers. EVinfo.net recommends all Rivian EVs. Get yours now while the federal EV tax credits are still available, and before disorganized tariffs cause hefty price increases. EVs are not only the most eco-friendly transportation, but the most cost-effective as well, compared to gas and hybrid vehicles.
