NY Celebrates Expansion of State’s Clean Fleet and Charging Network During Annual EV Fleet EVent
On May 7, 2026, The New York State Office of General Services and New York Power Authority celebrated the expansion of the state’s clean fleet and charging network during the annual electric vehicle fleet event.
The New York State Office of General Services and New York Power Authority announced major progress in New York’s transition to clean transportation, revealing that more than 1,850 zero-emission vehicles are now operating across the state fleet.
The announcement was made during the fourth annual Electric Vehicle Fleet EVent held May 7 at Empire State Plaza in Albany. Organized by OGS and NYPA, the event highlighted New York’s efforts to decarbonize government operations and expand sustainable transportation infrastructure.
State officials said zero-emission vehicles now account for more than 10% of New York’s light-duty, non-emergency fleet, marking significant progress toward the state’s goal of transitioning all light-duty, non-emergency government vehicles to zero-emission models by 2035 and all medium- and heavy-duty vehicles by 2040.

New York has also significantly expanded its EV charging infrastructure to support the growing fleet. More than 1,300 state-owned charging ports are currently operational, while another 550 chargers are in the design and construction phase. The charging network includes Level 2 chargers, DC fast chargers, and off-grid solar-powered chargers with battery storage systems.
Officials emphasized that electrifying the state fleet not only reduces emissions but also lowers fuel and maintenance costs over time.
This year’s Electric Vehicle Fleet EVent expanded beyond passenger vehicles for the first time to include electric landscaping, maintenance, and off-road equipment. State leaders said electrifying this equipment can help reduce localized air pollution and noise exposure for government workers and visitors at public facilities.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Amanda Lefton said, “The annual Electric Vehicle Fleet EVent highlights the state’s progress in transitioning to electric vehicles while helping educate consumers and the public about reduced costs, improved health, and other benefits of driving electric rather than gas-powered vehicles. DEC is leading by example under Governor Hochul’s Executive Order 22, through investing in electric vehicles and equipment as part of our state fleet and awarding millions in grants that are putting hundreds of municipal EVs and plug-in hybrids on the roads — reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality for New Yorkers.”

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “Reaching this milestone reflects New York’s continued leadership in advancing zero-emission transportation and building the infrastructure to support it. By working across agencies toward a shared goal, we are leading by example to reduce reliance on gasoline-powered vehicles, improve air quality, and show New Yorkers the benefits of a cleaner, more reliable transportation system.”
The event brought together government fleet managers, sustainability officials, manufacturers, dealerships, and industry experts to discuss fleet electrification strategies, workforce development, vehicle telematics, rebate programs, and state procurement opportunities.
The annual gathering also highlighted implementation of Executive Order 22 under Governor Kathy Hochul, which directs New York state agencies to adopt broader sustainability and decarbonization initiatives as part of the state’s long-term climate strategy.
